MELBOURNE - Mar 6/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Severe Weather Warnings are current for flash flooding in the Peninsula, North Tropical Coast, Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Channel Country districts. A Gale Warning is current for coastal waters between Mackay and Point Danger. A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Cardwell and Mackay, and for Hervey and Moreton Bays. Flood Warnings are current for the Nicholson, Lower Norman, Moonie, Georgina and Lower Diamantina Rivers, for Eyre Creek and for Western Queensland Rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A low over the far western Channel Country is expected to move west into the Northern Territory tonight. The monsoon trough lies over the far northern tropics, with a weak tropical low north of Cairns expected to move southwest over southern Cape York Peninsula overnight. A high [1032 hPa] over the Tasman Sea will begin to weaken during Monday but still maintain a firm ridge along most of the east Queensland coast south of the monsoon trough with fresh to strong SE winds, particularly about the central coast. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, with areas of rain and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls over the north. Patchy light rain and showers elsewhere, increasing to rain and scattered thunderstorms over the Channel Country, particularly near the Northern Territory border. Fine over the southern interior. Light to moderate NW to NE winds over the far northern tropics. Fresh to strong and gusty S to SE winds along the southern and central coasts, tending moderate to fresh SE to NE elsewhere. Forecast for Monday Scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms across the northern tropics with moderate to heavy falls. Isolated afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms elsewhere in the tropics, increasing to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms near the coast. Areas of rain over the southwest as the low moves away to the west and continues to weaken with some isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Isolated showers about the remaining coast and fine over the southern interior. Remaining cool by day over most of the interior, particularly in the west. Forecast for Tuesday The monsoon trough will persist over the northern tropics with scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls. The high over the Tasman Sea will continue to weaken but maintain a ridge along most of the east Queensland coast to the south of the monsoon trough with fresh to strong SE winds and showers; these showers to extend into the eastern interior in the afternoon. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the far west. Fine over the southern and central interior. Remaining cool by day over most of the interior. Forecast for Wednesday The monsoon trough will have moved north over the northern tropics in response to the ridge along the east coast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms continuing through the northern tropics with areas of rain and moderate to heavy falls over the Gulf Country and Cape York Peninsula. The high will move over New Zealand and continue to weaken but maintain a ridge along most of the east Queensland coast to the south of the monsoon trough, where fresh SE winds and showers will occur, the showers extending into the eastern interior in the afternoon. Isolated showers and thunderstorms continuing over the far west. Fine over the southern and central interior. Forecast for Thursday A weakening ridge will be maintained along the east coast from a high near New Zealand. The monsoon trough will lie across the western Gulf Country and northern Cape York Peninsula, generating scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls. More isolated showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over the tropics with scattered showers near the tropical coast. Isolated showers otherwise about the eastern interior and fine over the central interior. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the far west, increasing in the southwest late in the day as a new trough approaches from New South Wales. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The high will move to the southeast of New Zealand, maintaining a ridge along the southern and central Queensland coast with some showers, extending into the eastern interior in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms persisting over the northern tropics due to the monsoon trough and further moderate to heavy falls possible with rain over the Gulf Country and Cape York Peninsula. The trough over the southwest will generate some showers and thunderstorms over the southwest and southern interior, spreading towards the southeast late Friday or Saturday and persisting across southern Queensland on Sunday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Monday.
