MELBOURNE - Mar 5/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for flash flooding for the Peninsula, North Tropical Coast and Channel Country districts. A Gale Warning is current for coastal waters between Yeppoon and Point Danger. A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Mackay and Yeppoon, and for Hervey and Moreton Bays. Flood Warnings are current for the Leichhardt, Nicholson, Lower Norman, Moonie, Western Queensland Rivers, and for Coastal and adjacent inland streams from Maryborough to the NSW border. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A low near the Northern Territory border is expected to move remain slow moving about Southwest Queensland. A surface trough lies from this low through central Qld and into the Coral Sea, moving north. The monsoon trough lies over the far northern tropics, with a weak tropical low northeast of Cape York Peninsula. A high is lying over Tasmania. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Rain and thunderstorms over the Channel Country with heavy falls likely. Scattered showers about the southeast coast. Mostly fine over the remaining far southern interior with just very isolated showers or drizzle. Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms otherwise over western and southern Queensland with possible moderate to locally heavy falls, shifting north into central districts overnight. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of Queensland, increasing to areas of rain with moderate to heavy falls over northern Cape York Peninsula and the North Tropical Coast. Fresh to strong and gusty S to SE winds along the southern coast and the adjacent interior. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, shifting NE to NW over the tropical interior. Forecast for Sunday The surface trough will move north along the southern tropical coast with strong and gusty SE winds and showers, due to a firm ridge from the high moving into the Tasman Sea. The deep low over the far western Channel Country is likely to move west and weaken late in the day, with areas of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms in its vicinity beginning to ease late in the day as well. The rain band over eastern Queensland continues to contract north over central districts and weaken, though scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist over the tropics. The tropical low over the northwest Coral Sea is likely to move over Cape York Peninsula, increasing the rain over the north tropical coast with moderate to heavy falls developing overnight. Remaining cool by day over western, central and southeast districts. Fresh to strong and gusty S to SE winds along the central and southern coasts and the adjacent interior. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, shifting NE to NW over the tropical interior. Forecast for Monday The monsoon trough will persist over the northern tropics with scattered showers and thunderstorms, increasing to rain with heavy falls about the coast and adjacent inland between about Cooktown and Bowen. The high over the Tasman Sea will begin to weaken but still maintain a firm ridge along most of the east Queensland coast south of the monsoon trough with fresh to strong SE winds and showers, particularly about the central coast. Areas of morning rain over the far southwest as the low moves away to the west and continues to weaken with some isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Fine over the southern interior. Remaining cool by day over most of the interior, particularly in the west. Forecast for Tuesday The monsoon trough will persist over the northern tropics with scattered showers and thunderstorms, with moderate to heavy falls still possible about the tropical coast and Cape York Peninsula. The high over the Tasman Sea will continue to weaken but maintain a ridge along most of the east Queensland coast to the south of the monsoon trough with fresh to strong SE winds and showers, particularly about the central coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the far west. Fine over the southern and central interior. Forecast for Wednesday The monsoon trough will have moved north over the northern tropics in response to the ridge along the east coast, with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Moderate to heavy falls will still be possible about the North Tropical Coast and Cape York Peninsula. The high over the Tasman Sea will continue to weaken but maintain a ridge along most of the east Queensland coast to the south of the monsoon trough with fresh SE winds and showers, particularly about the central coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the far west, increasing about the far southwest late in the day as a new surface trough approaches. Fine over the southern and central interior. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The high will move to the southeast of New Zealand, maintaining a ridge along the southern and central Queensland coast with some showers, extending into the eastern interior in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms persisting over the northern tropics due to the monsoon trough and further moderate to heavy falls possible. The near stationary trough over the far southwest will continue to generate isolated showers and thunderstorms in the southwest and southern interior before weakening on Saturday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Sunday.
