moving about Southwest Queensland. A surface trough lies from this low through
central Qld and into the Coral Sea, moving north. The monsoon trough lies over
the far northern tropics, with a weak tropical low northeast of Cape York
Peninsula. A high is lying over Tasmania.

Rain and thunderstorms over the Channel Country with heavy falls likely.
Scattered showers about the southeast coast. Mostly fine over the remaining far
southern interior with just very isolated showers or drizzle. Areas of rain and
isolated thunderstorms otherwise over western and southern Queensland with
possible moderate to locally heavy falls, shifting north into central districts
overnight. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of
Queensland, increasing to areas of rain with moderate to heavy falls over
northern Cape York Peninsula and the North Tropical Coast. Fresh to strong and
gusty S to SE winds along the southern coast and the adjacent interior. Mostly
light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, shifting NE to NW over the tropical
interior.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface trough will move north along the southern tropical coast with
strong and gusty SE winds and showers, due to a firm ridge from the high moving
into the Tasman Sea. The deep low over the far western Channel Country is likely
to move west and weaken late in the day, with areas of heavy rain and isolated
thunderstorms in its vicinity beginning to ease late in the day as well. The
rain band over eastern Queensland continues to contract north over central
districts and weaken, though scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist
over the tropics. The tropical low over the northwest Coral Sea is likely to
move over Cape York Peninsula, increasing the rain over the north tropical coast
with moderate to heavy falls developing overnight. Remaining cool by day over
western, central and southeast districts. Fresh to strong and gusty S to SE
winds along the central and southern coasts and the adjacent interior. Mostly
light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, shifting NE to NW over the tropical
interior.
Forecast for Monday
The monsoon trough will persist over the northern tropics with scattered
showers and thunderstorms, increasing to rain with heavy falls about the coast
and adjacent inland between about Cooktown and Bowen. The high over the Tasman
Sea will begin to weaken but still maintain a firm ridge along most of the east
Queensland coast south of the monsoon trough with fresh to strong SE winds and
showers, particularly about the central coast. Areas of morning rain over the
far southwest as the low moves away to the west and continues to weaken with
some isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Fine over the southern
interior. Remaining cool by day over most of the interior, particularly in the
west.
Forecast for Tuesday
The monsoon trough will persist over the northern tropics with scattered
showers and thunderstorms, with moderate to heavy falls still possible about the
tropical coast and Cape York Peninsula. The high over the Tasman Sea will
continue to weaken but maintain a ridge along most of the east Queensland coast
to the south of the monsoon trough with fresh to strong SE winds and showers,
particularly about the central coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over
the far west. Fine over the southern and central interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
The monsoon trough will have moved north over the northern tropics in
response to the ridge along the east coast, with scattered showers and
thunderstorms. Moderate to heavy falls will still be possible about the North
Tropical Coast and Cape York Peninsula. The high over the Tasman Sea will
continue to weaken but maintain a ridge along most of the east Queensland coast
to the south of the monsoon trough with fresh SE winds and showers, particularly
about the central coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the far west,
increasing about the far southwest late in the day as a new surface trough
approaches. Fine over the southern and central interior.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The high will move to the southeast of New Zealand, maintaining a ridge along
the southern and central Queensland coast with some showers, extending into the
eastern interior in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms persisting over the
northern tropics due to the monsoon trough and further moderate to heavy falls
possible. The near stationary trough over the far southwest will continue to
generate isolated showers and thunderstorms in the southwest and southern
interior before weakening on Saturday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
