MELBOURNE - Mar 4/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for flash flooding in the Channel Country. A Gale Warning is current for coastal waters between Sandy Cape and Point Danger for Saturday. A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between St Lawrence and Burnett Heads, and Hervey and Moreton Bays, for Saturday. Flood Warnings are current for the Leichhardt, Nicholson, Lower Norman, Moonie and Western Queensland Rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A deep low over the Northern Territory is expected to move southeast to near the western Queensland border overnight. A surface trough lies from this low over the southern Queensland interior and then over northeast New South Wales, moving north. The monsoon trough lies over the far northern tropics, with a weak tropical low just south of Papua New Guinea. A high is lying over the Southern Ocean. Forecast for the rest of Friday Rain and thunderstorms over the Channel Country with heavy falls. Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms over remaining western and southern districts with moderate to locally heavy falls. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the remainder of Queensland, more isolated about the tropical coast and adjacent inland between Cooktown and St Lawrence. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds, shifting NE to NW over the interior ahead of a SW to SE change over the far south. Forecast for Saturday Rain and thunderstorms over the Channel Country with heavy falls. Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms over remaining western and southern districts with moderate to locally heavy falls, shifting north into central districts but easing to showers over the southeast during the day. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the remainder of Queensland, more isolated about the tropical coast and adjacent inland between Cairns and Mackay. A cool day over western and southern districts. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds, shifting NE to NW over the tropical interior. A strong and gusty S to SE wind change developing along the southern and Capricornia coast during the day. Forecast for Sunday The surface trough will move north along the southern tropical coast with strong and gusty SE winds and showers about the coast to the south due to the firm ridge from the high moving over the southern Tasman Sea. The deep low over the far western Channel Country is likely to move west and weaken late in the day, with areas of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms in its vicinity beginning to ease late in the day as well. The rain band over eastern Queensland is likely to contract north over central districts and weaken, though scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist over the tropics. The tropical low over the northwest Coral Sea is likely to increase the rain over the north tropical coast with moderate to heavy falls developing overnight. Remaining cool by day over western, central and southeast districts. Forecast for Monday The monsoon trough will persist over the northern tropics with scattered showers and thunderstorms, increasing to rain with heavy falls about the coast and adjacent inland between about Cooktown and Bowen due to the slow moving tropical low offshore. At this stage, there is a low to moderate chance of the low intensifying into a more significant system as it interacts with the SE wind change from the south. The high over the Tasman Sea will begin to weaken but maintain a firm ridge along most of the east Queensland coast south of the monsoon trough and tropical low with fresh to strong SE winds and showers, particularly about the central coast. Areas of morning rain over the far southwest as the low moves away to the west and continues to weaken. Fine over the southern interior. Remaining cool by day over most of the interior, particularly in the west. Forecast for Tuesday The monsoon trough will persist over the northern tropics with scattered showers and thunderstorms, with further rain and heavy falls about the coast and adjacent inland between about Cooktown and Bowen due to the slow moving tropical low offshore. Computer models suggest a moderate chance of the tropical low further developing off the north tropical coast, though there is still considerable uncertainty associated with this scenario. The high over the Tasman Sea will continue to weaken but maintain a ridge along most of the east Queensland coast to the south of the monsoon trough and tropical low with fresh to strong SE winds and showers, particularly about the central coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the far west. Fine over the southern and central interior. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The high will move to the southeast of New Zealand, maintaining a ridge along the southern and central Queensland coast with some showers, extending into the eastern interior in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms persisting over the northern tropics due to the monsoon trough and further moderate to heavy falls possible, particularly if the tropical low has deepened off the north tropical coast. A new trough may approach the far southwest from Thursday with isolated showers and thunderstorms in this area and over the far southern interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
