MELBOURNE - Mar 2/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for the Leichhardt, Nicholson and Lower Norman Rivers, Western Queensland Rivers, and coastal rivers and streams between Cooktown and Townsville. A Severe Weather Warning is current for the Gulf Country. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A monsoonal low lies over eastern parts of the Northern Territory. A stationary surface trough occurs over the southern interior. A weak ridge lies along the east coast. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Rain areas and thunderstorms in the NW of the state. Patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over the southern interior this morning increasing to showers and thunderstorms during the day. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of QLD. Increasing thunderstorms over the southern interior this afternoon will tend to thundery rain overnight. Easing N'ly winds in the southern Gulf. Light to moderate SE/NE winds about the east coast. Light to moderate N'ly winds over the interior, tending S'ly over southern districts. Forecast for Friday A freshening S/SE change will move through the SE coastal district with maximum precipitation and thunderstorms. Thundery rain across the southern interior near the surface stationary trough with moderate to heavy falls in the west. Rain areas will spread to the SE region later in the day. Showers and thunderstorms generally over the remainder of QLD, although decreasing towards the NE tropics. Forecast for Saturday The surface trough continues moving north along the coast into the Capricorn region with strong SE winds and coastal showers. Thundery rain continuing across the southern interior with moderate to heavy falls. Becoming fine in the far south. Showers and thunderstorms generally over the remainder of QLD. Forecast for Sunday The coastal trough reaches the Mackay region with rain areas that extend into the interior with thunderstorms. Showers and thunderstorms generally over the tropics. Increasing rain areas about the NE tropical coast as a tropical low moves in from the Coral Sea. Strong SE winds remaining south of the coastal trough. Fine over many southern districts. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday By Monday, the tropical low has moved into the southern tropics with widespread rain areas. Showers and thunderstorms mainly in the west. Showers persisting about the east coast with easing SE winds. By Tuesday, Rain areas and thunderstorms over the tropics, showers and thunderstorms far west, fine over the eastern and southern interior. By Wednesday, rain areas and thunderstorms extending south into the central interior, little change elsewhere. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
