MELBOURNE - Mar 2/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for the Leichhardt, Nicholson and Lower Norman Rivers, Western Queensland Rivers, and coastal rivers and streams between Cooktown and Townsville. A Severe Weather Warning is current for the Gulf Country and Northwest district. A Coastal Waters Wind Warning is current for southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A strong monsoonal low lies over eastern parts of the Northern Territory. A surface trough is moving into Queensland from the southwest. A weak ridge lies along the east coast. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Heavy rain areas with moderate to heavy falls over the NW. Isolated showers and thunderstorms elsewhere, becoming scattered in the southeast. Light to moderate NE to NW winds, fresh and gusty about the northwest. Light to moderate S to SE in the far southwest. Forecast for Thursday Heavy rain areas with moderate to heavy falls in the northwest, slowly extending south to the northwest Channel Country. Showers and thunderstorms generally over the remainder of Queensland, though the northeast districts should see more isolated activity. Rain areas at night about the southern inland. Light to moderate NE to NW winds, fresh and gusty about the northwest. Light to moderate SW to SE in southern parts. Forecast for Friday The monsoonal low may lie just to the east of the Channel Country, extending a surface trough through the southern interior, while an upper trough further adds to the instability over the southern half of the state. Moderate to heavy rain is possible within the far southwest of the state around the monsoonal low. Showers and storms likely through the rest of Queensland, though more active and widespread about the southern districts and spreading to rain. A late southerly wind change about the southeast coast. Forecast for Saturday The southerly wind change should spread rapidly towards the central coast during the day, though it should produce active showers and storms ahead of it as it travels over the Wide Bay, Capricornia and Central Highlands districts. Cooler with mainly coastal showers behind the change over the southeast districts. The monsoon low may still lie just to the west of the Channel Country, and so moderate to heavy falls about the southwest are likely. Scattered showers and storms about the remainder of the tropics, spreading to rain areas overnight over the Central districts. Forecast for Sunday The surface trough continues moving northwards through the southern parts, with only isolated showers near the coast and cool conditions inland. Showers and thunderstorms through the remainder of the state, spreading to rain areas in the west and moderate to heavy falls likely through the southwest. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Mostly fine conditions in the southeast and southern inland, with only isolated showers near the coast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the tropics. Heavy rain areas in the far west easing on Sunday to showers and thunderstorms, becoming mostly fine from Tuesday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
