MELBOURNE - Feb 28/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for the Herbert, Tully and Murray Rivers and for the remaining coastal rivers and streams between Cooktown and Townsville. Flood warnings are also current for Western Queensland rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak high lies along the Queensland coast with a weak trough moving north along the N.S.W coast. An active monsoon trough lies over far northern Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Monday Rain areas and thunderstorms about the Gulf coast with moderate to heavy falls. Showers and thunderstorms generally over the tropics. Showers and rain areas on the southern tropical coast between Cardwell and Townsville. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the SE interior this evening and some isolated showers about the central coast. Fine over the remainder of the state. Moderate to fresh NW/NE winds over the southern Gulf, light to moderate NW/NE winds over the remainder of the tropics. Light to moderate E/NE winds over the remainder of the state. Forecast for Tuesday The monsoonal low over the western Gulf region will drift SW extending the heavier rain areas further south over the NW of the state. Showers and thunderstorms continuing over the tropics with some rain areas between Townsville and Bowen. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms developing into the Channel Country and in the SE region. Isolated late showers across southern districts. Fine across the central and eastern interior. Remaining hot over most of the interior with N/NW winds. S'ly winds developing near the southern border as a trough moves in from S.A. Forecast for Wednesday The monsoonal low moves into the Northern Territory with reduced rainfall intensity over the NW of the state. Showers and thunderstorms continuing across the tropics with an easing of the rain areas on the southern tropical coast. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms over the SW and across southern districts including the SE. Fine over the eastern interior. Isolated showers about the central coast. The trough over the SW of the state moves slowly towards the western Darling Downs region. Forecast for Thursday Rain areas continue to decrease over the NW of the state. Showers and thunderstorms continue over the tropics, west and southern interior near the stationary surface trough. Becoming fine along the southern border. Thunderstorm activity will increase over the SE region. The fine area over the eastern interior will diminish. Forecast for Friday The surface trough remains stationary over the southern interior but now moves through the SE region. Showers and thunderstorms over most of the state, fine along the southern border west of about Goodooga. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday By Saturday, the trough moves into the Capricorn region with a focus of thunderstorm activity. Showers generally further south along the coast with cooler temperatures and freshening SE winds. Showers and thunderstorms remaining over the remainder of the state. By Sunday, rain areas and thunderstorms in the NW, showers and thunderstorms over the remainder of the state apart from the greater SE region where isolated showers occur. By Monday, as the coastal trough moves further north, thunderstorm activity will contract into the southern tropics. Fine across the southern interior. Cooler conditions about most of the east coast with strong SE winds. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
