Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 23/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Cairns and Point Danger, including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay.
A Flood Warning is current for Western Queensland Rivers.

Weather Situation
A high over the Great Australian Bight is moving slowly east, and extends a
strong ridge along the southern and central Queensland coast. A surface trough
lies over the far southwest. The monsoon trough lies over far northern
Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula, the Gulf
Country and Northwest districts. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
over the remainder of the tropics, more widespread about the coast north of
about Proserpine with moderate to locally heavy falls. Scattered showers and
drizzle along the Southeast Coast, with more isolated showers about the
remaining coast and adjacent inland. Fine over the southern and central
interior. Fresh to strong and gusty S to SE winds along the southern and central
coasts. Mostly moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Thursday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf
Country, increasing to rain near the Gulf coast at night. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern tropics, more
widespread about the North Tropical Coast with moderate to locally heavy falls.
Isolated showers and drizzle along the remaining east coast and adjacent inland,
scattered along the coast in the morning. Fine over the southern and central
interior. Fresh and gusty S to SE winds along the southern and central coasts.
Mostly moderate to locally fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Friday
The weakening high moves over the Tasman Sea while the monsoon trough will
continue to lie over the northern tropics. The ridge along the coast will
weaken. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the
Gulf Country, with rain areas near the Gulf coast. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern tropics. Isolated
showers and drizzle along the remaining east coast and adjacent inland,
scattered along the coast in the morning. Fine over the southern and central
interior. Moderate to locally fresh SE winds along the southern and central
coasts. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, tending NE to NW over the
far northern tropics.
Forecast for Saturday
The weak high persists over the Tasman Sea while the monsoon trough moves a
little further south over the northern tropics. Scattered showers, rain areas
and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country with moderate to
locally heavy falls. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the
remainder of the northern tropics and the northwest. Isolated showers and
drizzle along the remaining east coast and adjacent inland, scattered along the
Central Coast in the morning. Fine over the southern and central interior. Light
to moderate SE to NE winds, tending NE to NW over the far northern tropics and
far southern Queensland. A warmer day in the south.
Forecast for Sunday
The weak high moves to the east of New Zealand while the monsoon trough
persists over the northern tropics. Scattered showers, rain areas and
thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country with moderate to
locally heavy falls. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the
remainder of the northern tropics and the northwest. Isolated showers about the
remaining tropical coast. Fine and very warm to hot over southern Queensland.
Light to moderate SE to NE winds along the tropical coast. Mostly moderate NW to
NE winds elsewhere.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
A new high is expected to move east across the Great Australian Bight and
into Southeast Australia by Tuesday and Wednesday. The monsoon trough will
persist over the northern tropics. Continuing fine over southern Queensland on
Monday with scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms across the tropics.
Hot over the interior ahead of the next approaching trough system with NE to NW
winds. Patchy rain or showers and thunderstorms developing over southern and
southeast Queensland on Tuesday, slowly spreading north into central Queensland
during Wednesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
