MELBOURNE - Feb 22/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Gale Warning is current for waters south of Gladstone, including Hervey and Moreton Bays. A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Mackay and Gladstone. Flood warning for Western Queensland Rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high in the Great Australian Bight, 1027 hPa, is pushing a trough north along the central Queensland coast. A surface trough extends from the northwest of the state to the coastal trough over eastern Qld. The monsoon trough extends from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the northern parts of the Coral Sea. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, more isolated through the central interior. Isolated showers about remaining eastern districts. Fine in the west. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, tending fresh to strong and gusty about the southern east coast. Forecast for Wednesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the tropics, becoming more isolated in the far west. Isolated showers about the east coast, extending inland in the afternoon. Fine in the southern interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh to strong and gusty about the southern east coast. Forecast for Thursday The high over southern Australia weakens and this will contract the strong winds about the Qld coast from Cairns to Gladstone. Thunderstorms contracting to the NW and Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers about the east coast. Dry over the interior and southern districts. Forecast for Friday SE winds will continue to weaken about the east coast with an end to the strong wind warnings. Isolated showers near the east coast, decreasing on the SE coast. Thunderstorms confined to the Gulf and Cape York region. Dry over the interior. Forecast for Saturday Showers and thunderstorms about the tropics and northwest. Isolated showers about the central coast, developing about the southern tropical interior in the afternoon. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday Mostly stable conditions about southern Queensland with mostly fine conditions, though a trough from the west may produce some afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Showers and thunderstorms generally in the north. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Wednesday.
