MELBOURNE - Feb 21/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Gale Warning has been issued for waters south of Gladstone, including Hervey and Moreton Bays. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for waters between Mackay and Gladstone. A flood warning is current for the Georgina River. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high in the Great Australian Bight, 1029 hPa, is pushing a strong southerly wind change along the southern Qld coast. A surface trough extends from the northwest of the state to the coastal trough in the southeast. The monsoon trough extends from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the northern parts of the Coral Sea. Forecast for the rest of Monday Scattered showers and thunderstorms for most of the state, with only isolated showers and thunderstorms in the southwest and southern inland. Some of these thunderstorms are severe. A gusty S'ly change moving through the southeast coast this evening. Light to moderate SW to SE winds generally, tending NE'ly in the east. Forecast for Tuesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the northern half of the state, and through the southeast areas but contracting northwards during the day. Isolated showers otherwise about the southeast and southern interior. Fine in the southwest. Cooler temperatures in the southern parts of the state, with strong and gusty winds about the southern coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Wednesday The high should remain near Victoria and will extend the strong SE'ly winds further northwards up the east coast, reaching around Townsville by late evening. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue over the tropics, and possibly extend southwest into the Channel Country. The ridge will stabilise conditions over the central and southern interior. Cloudy and windy with patchy drizzle about the southeast districts. Cool daytime temperatures for this time of year are expected over much of the state. Forecast for Thursday The high should remain near stationary while weakening, allowing the strong winds to gradually ease over the east coast of Queensland. A ridge will continue to dominate weather over southern and central parts of the state, leading to fine conditions about the southern and central interior. Showers and thunderstorms will continue over northern districts and the western border regions, while the cloudy, windy and drizzly conditions about the southeast will gradually ease. Forecast for Friday The high will weaken over southeast Australia, easing the ridge along the east coast. Isolated showers about the east coast in the south. Showers and thunderstorms continuing in the northern half of the state, and possibly extending into the southwest. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The monsoon trough should remain weak and remain over Cape York Peninsula. Scattered showers and thunderstorms should continue over the northern districts. The high will weaken further, keeping conditions reasonably stable and mostly fine in southern parts. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
