Weather Situation
A high in the Great Australian Bight, 1028 hPa, is pushing a strong southerly
wind change up the NSW coast towards QLD. A surface trough extends from the
northwest of the state into the Darling Downs. The monsoon trough extends from
the Gulf of Carpentaria to the northern parts of the Coral Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Hot and humid over the southeast ahead of a cool S'ly change extending from
the south during the afternoon and evening. Gusty showers with possible hail
developing ahead of the change over the southeastern districts. Some of those
storms may be severe. Scattered thunderstorms over the northern tropics, along
with scattered gusty storms over the central and northwest parts of the state.
Showers spreading to patchy rain areas about the southeast districts and over
the tropics. Cool and gusty S to SE winds southwestern parts of the state.
Light and variable winds over most of the rest of the state, except for the
gusty southerly change about the southeast district.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high will move slowly east towards southeastern Australia, extending a
firm ridge and strong SE'ly winds over the Queensland coast south of about
Mackay. The SE'ly wind flow will result in much cooler daytime temperatures over
southeastern and central Queensland. Gusty showers with early storms about the
southeast and Wide Bay coasts, contracting northwards during the day, though
cloudy conditions will remain, along with areas of drizzle in the fresh onshore
wind flow. Conditions should remain fine and reasonably cool for this time of
year over southwestern Queensland due to a dry, stable airmass. Showers and
thunderstorms are expected over remaining parts of the state, more widespread
and active over central districts and the northwest.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high should remain near Victoria and will extend the strong SE'ly winds
further northwards up the east coast, reaching around Townsville by late
evening. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue over the tropics,
and should also extend into the Channel Country. The ridge will stabilise
conditions over the central and southern interior. Cloudy and windy with patchy
drizzle about the southeast districts. Cool daytime temperatures for this time
of year are expected over much of the state.
Forecast for Thursday
The should remain near stationary while weakening, allowing the strong winds
to gradually ease over the east coast of Queensland. A ridge will continue to
dominate weather over southern and central parts of the state, leading to fine
conditions about the southern and central interior. Showers and thunderstorms
will continue over northern districts and the western border regions, while the
cloudy, windy and drizzly conditions about the southeast will gradually
ease.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The monsoon trough should remain weak and is likely to remain over Cape York
Peninsula. Scattered showers and thunderstorms should continue over the northern
districts. The high should weaken a little further late in the week while
remaining near Victoria over the weekend, allowing winds to ease further over
Queensland's east coast. The ridge should maintain generally stable conditions
over southern and central Queensland, including the southeast.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
