Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 19/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A flood warning is current for the Georgina River.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A monsoon trough extends from Ex Tropical Cyclone Carlos over northwestern
Australia into the Gulf of Carpentaria and Cape York Peninsula and then into the
Coral Sea to Tropical Cyclone Atu near Vanuatu. Tropical Cyclone Atu is expected
to move south and therefore poses no threat to the Queensland coast. A high
south of New Zealand extends a weakening ridge along the southern and central
coast of Queensland. A surface trough lies over far southwestern parts of the
state and will move slowly east to extend from the northern Channel Country to
the southwestern Darling Downs by Sunday evening.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over much of the northern tropics and
through the Northwest District. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms
elsewhere over western districts west of about Longreach to Thargomindah.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southern tropics, central
districts and northern parts of the Wide Bay with thunderstorms occurring
chiefly inland. Fine elsewhere apart from very isolated light showers in the
southeast. Very warm over southern Queensland with light to moderate N to NE
winds. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times along
the southern tropical and central coasts.
Forecast for Sunday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, the Northwest district
and southwestern parts of the state. Mostly fine conditions in the far southeast
with just the chance of isolated afternoon showers. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms over remaining parts, particularly inland during the
afternoon. Warm to hot temperatures over southern Queensland due to N'ly winds
ahead of the surface trough. These temperatures combined with humid conditions
will result in high heat stress, particularly over the Southeast Coast and Wide
Bay and Burnett Districts. Cooler, moderate S'ly winds developing over
southwestern parts behind the trough. Light winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough will move a little further north and east over inland
Queensland. Hot and humid conditions will persist over southeastern Queensland
ahead of a cool S'ly wind change most likely moving into the area during the
afternoon or evening. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over much
of the state due to the surface trough over inland parts and the weak monsoon
trough to the north. An upper level trough combined with the cool S'ly wind
change could enhance shower and thunderstorm activity over southeastern parts of
the state in the afternoon and evening hours. Showers and thunderstorms should
contract north out of southwestern Queensland during the day with much cooler
daytime temperatures expected.
Forecast for Tuesday
A strong high will move slowly east over the Great Australian Bight,
extending a ridge and strong SE'ly winds along the southern coast of Queensland,
most likely contracting thunderstorm activity to areas north of about Fraser
Island by the afternoon. The SE'ly wind flow will result in much cooler daytime
temperatures over southeastern Queensland with showers still likely,
particularly near the coast. Fine conditions are expected over southwestern
Queensland due to a dry, stable airmass. Showers and thunderstorms are expected
over remaining parts of the state, more widespread over central districts near
the inland surface trough and also through the far northern tropics due to the
weak monsoon trough.
Forecast for Wednesday
The inland trough will most likely move into far southwestern parts of the
state as the high moves towards southeastern Australia and extends a ridge into
central and southern districts. Showers and thunderstorms should therefore
gradually contract to areas north of about Mackay in the afternoon with possible
locally heavy falls with thunderstorms. Strong SE'ly winds will push showers
onto the coast and adjacent inland south of Mackay. Fine conditions are expected
over the southern interior due to drier winds, apart from the chance of very
isolated showers and thunderstorms over far southwestern parts near the inland
trough.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
A weak monsoon trough will most likely remain slow moving over far northern
Cape York Peninsula. Scattered showers and thunderstorms should continue over
northern districts throughout the outlook period due to the moist, unstable
airmass to the south of this trough. The ridge will dominate weather elsewhere
over the state, with isolated showers expected near the coast and adjacent
inland and fine conditions over the southern interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
