Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 18/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
An weak monsoon trough extends over Far North Queensland from Ex-Tropical
Cyclone Carlos over the Northern Territory a low near Vanuatu. The low is not
expected to enter the Coral Sea. A high southeast of New Zealand extends a
weakening ridge along the southern and central coast of Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Scattered showers and afternoon thunderstorms are expected to continue over
most of the tropics, and also over the Central Highlands, Capricornia and Wide
Bay districts. Fine except for a few isolated showers about the southeast coast
and nearby interior. Isolated showers and thunderstorms should develop over
western and southwestern Queensland ahead of a new surface trough entering this
region by late in the day. Very warm over southern Queensland.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface trough should remain over the southwest of the state as an upper
trough moves across southeast Australia. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are
expected to persist about the tropics with the weak monsoon trough still about
the far north of the state. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms should
extend along most of the east coast and nearby inland, but with only isolated
shower and thunderstorm activity about the central and southeast interior and
just isolated showers about the southeast coast. Showers and thunderstorms will
increase in the west and southwest of the state in response to the surface
trough. Hot conditions across the south of the state.
Forecast for Monday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist about the
tropics. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are also likely to develop across
the remainder of the state, including the southeast, ahead of the surface
trough. A fresh to strong southerly change is expected to move over southeast
waters during Monday afternoon and extend north to Fraser Island overnight. Hot
conditions ahead of the trough with northwesterly winds, shifting cooler and
gusty southerly behind the trough. Showers and thunderstorms should clear from
the far southwest late in the day.
Forecast for Tuesday
A strong high south of the continent will push cooler southeasterly winds
further into Queensland, providing relief for the southern half of the state. By
contrast the northern half of the state should reach temperatures around the
February average, and should also remain humid with scattered showers and
isolated storms. Isolated afternoon showers about the southern and southeast
interior, tending more widespread about the southeast and central coast. Fresh
to strong southerly winds about the southeast and Capricornia coast, tending
light to moderate E to SE'ly over the remainder of the state.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms should continue over the tropics with the
weak monsoon trough persisting over Cape York Peninsula. The surface trough
should continue moving north across the state on Wednesday, contracting the bulk
of the showers and thunderstorms further to the north.  Fine conditions
developing across the southern interior. Showers are expected to gradually
lessen about the southern coast in the fresh south to southeast winds with the
high moving into the Tasman Sea on Thursday. Somewhat cooler air reaching the
far north of the state by Thursday.
