Australia -- Victoria Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 18/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A low pressure system over South Australia is expected to intensify and move southeastwards overnight, passing near Mt Gambier around midnight then heading towards Tasmania during Saturday. An associated trough will cross Victoria, clearing eastern districts during Saturday afternoon. A weak cold front will cross Victoria on Sunday as a high pressure system forms over waters south of the Bight. The high will move only slowly eastwards during Monday and Tuesday but will extend a ridge eastwards towards southern Victoria.
Forecast for the rest of FridayIsolated showers in the east. Rain areas in the west extending eastwards overnight. The chance of thunderstorms mainly over the northwest. Freshening easterly winds along and coast, this evening. Strong northerly winds developing about elevated areas overnight.Saturday 19 FebruaryRain contracting to the east and clearing late afternoon with only isolated showers to follow over the southwest and along the coast. Locally heavy falls, particularly about the northeast ranges. Isolated thunderstorms contracting to the northeast. Northerly winds, strong and gusty about elevated areas, tending westerly and reaching strong to gale force about parts of the coast.Fire Danger -  Generally low to moderate.Sunday 20 FebruaryIsolated showers mainly on and south of the divide. A cool to mild day with fresh southwesterly winds.Monday 21 FebruaryFine apart from isolated showers in the south. A cool to mild day with moderate to locally fresh southerly winds.Tuesday 22 FebruaryFine apart from isolated morning showers about the coast. Cool near the coast, but milder and generally sunny inland with moderate south to southeasterly winds.The next routine forecast will be issued at 5:00 am EDT Saturday.Product IDV10310
