Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 16/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends from Tropical Cyclone "Carlos" near Darwin, over
far northern Cape York Peninsula and links to a weak low over the Coral Sea. A
high southeast of New Zealand extends a firm ridge along the southern and
central coast of Queensland. A slow moving upper level low will remain over the
western Coral Sea. A weakening surface trough near the far southwest of the
state.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms with moderate falls over the northwest
and northern tropics. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the
east coast and adjacent inland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the far
southwest, with only isolated showers or thunderstorms elsewhere. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times along the Central and Capricornia
coasts.
Forecast for Friday
The weak monsoon trough will extend over Cape York Peninsula to the weak low
moving west over the northern Coral Sea. At this stage the low is expected to
remain weak, located off the north tropical coast by night. Scattered showers
and thunderstorms with moderate falls will continue over most of the tropics.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected along the east coast
and adjacent inland, however only isolated showers are likely about southeast
districts in the weak onshore flow. Fine conditions are expected about the
Central West district and southern interior but isolated showers and
thunderstorms are expected over the far southwest of the state near the weak
surface trough.
Forecast for Saturday
The weak monsoon trough will extend over Cape York Peninsula, while the low
off the north tropical coast will  most likely move north and weaken. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue over most of the tropics,
extending south along the east coast to about the Wide Bay region. Isolated
showers about the southeast coast, with isolated afternoon showers expected over
the remaining eastern interior. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will develop
over western and southwestern Queensland ahead of a new surface trough entering
this region by late in the day. A very warm day is expected over southern
Queensland.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface trough is expected to move over the far southwest of the state as
an upper trough crosses southeast Australia. Scattered showers and thunderstorms
are expected to persist about the tropics with the weak monsoon trough
persisting about the far north of the state. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms will extend along most of the east coast and adjacent inland, but
with only isolated showers and possible thunderstorms about the southeast coast
and central to southeast interior. Showers and thunderstorms will increase in
the west and southwest of the state in response to the surface trough. Very warm
conditions will continue across the south of the state.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms should continue over the tropics with the
weak monsoon trough persisting over Cape York Peninsula. On Monday, showers and
isolated thunderstorms are likely to develop across most of the state ahead of
the upper and surface trough. A fresh to strong southerly change is expected to
spread over southeast waters during Monday afternoon. The surface trough should
then move north across the state on Tuesday and Wednesday contracting the
showers and thunderstorms northwards with fine conditions likely to develop
across the southern interior. Showers are expected to persist about the
southeast coast in the fresh to strong south to southeast winds. The surface
trough will also introduce cooler temperatures to the south of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
