MELBOURNE - Feb 15/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A flood warning is current for Western Queensland Rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A monsoon trough extends from a low over the Top End of the Northern Territory, then over far northern Cape York Peninsula and into the Coral Sea. A high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the southern and central coast of Queensland. A slow moving upper level low over the Coral Sea. A surface trough lies over the far southwest. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms with moderate falls over the tropics and the far southwest of the state. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Wide Bay, Burnett and Sunshine Coast easing to isolated showers over the remainder of the southeast. Very isolated showers or thunderstorms over the central west and southeast interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times along the southern to central coast. Forecast for Thursday The weak monsoon trough will extend over northern Cape York Peninsula to a weak low over the northern Coral Sea. Scattered showers and thunderstorms with moderate falls continuing over most of the tropics. Isolated showers about southeast districts in a weak onshore flow as the high moves further southeast of New Zealand. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the central and southern interior with a weak surface trough over the southwest of the state. Forecast for Friday The weak monsoon trough will extend over Cape York Peninsula to the low moving west over the northern Coral Sea. At this stage the low is expected to remain weak, located off the north tropical coast by night. Scattered showers and thunderstorms with moderate falls continuing over most of the tropics. Isolated showers about southeast districts in the weak onshore flow. Mostly fine with only isolated showers and thunderstorms over the central interior and the southwest near the weak surface trough. Warmer in the south. Forecast for Saturday The weak monsoon trough will extend over Cape York Peninsula, while the low off the north tropical coast will weaken. Scattered showers and thunderstorms continuing over most of the tropics, extending south along the east coast to about the Wide Bay region. Isolated showers about the southeast coast, with isolated afternoon showers over the remaining eastern interior. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over western and southwestern Queensland ahead of a new surface trough entering this region by late in the day. A very warm day over southern Queensland. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms should continue over the tropics with the weak monsoon trough persisting over Cape York Peninsula. Increasing showers and isolated thunderstorms about east coastal districts due to a more unstable SE to NE airflow. A band of scattered showers and thunderstorms over western Queensland on Sunday is expected to move east across the central and southern interior during Monday, reaching the southeast at night. On Tuesday the trough is expected to move northeast, to lie from northwest to southeast Queensland. Showers and thunderstorms continuing northeast of the trough, while a fresh to strong and gusty S'ly change will move along the southeast coast with showers. Becoming fine over the southern interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday.
