Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 14/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood warnings are current for the Flinders and Western
Queensland Rivers.

Weather Situation
A monsoon trough extends from the Top End of the Northern Territory, through
far northern Cape York Peninsula and into the Coral Sea. A high in the Tasman
Sea extends a ridge along the southern coast of Queensland. An upper level low
over the Coral Sea is slow moving. A surface trough lies over the southwest.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered showers, tending to thundery rain at times, is expected near the
coast and adjacent inland between about Ayr and Hervey Bay with some moderate
falls. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the north and northwest of the
state, and developing about the southwest in the afternoon. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms elsewhere in the afternoon. Light to moderate SE to NE winds,
fresh at times about the southern to central coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper level low will remain slow moving and persist off the southern
tropical coast. A weak monsoon trough will extend from the southeastern Gulf of
Carpentaria to the tropical coast near Cardwell, with scattered showers and
thunderstorms occurring to its north. Instability associated with the upper
level low will maintain scattered showers and thunderstorms over the southern
tropics, central districts and the northern Wide Bay. Isolated showers in the
southeast with morning drizzle areas and isolated afternoon showers. An upper
level trough will continue to produce showers and isolated thunderstorms over
the southern interior west of about Charleville.
Forecast for Thursday
A weak monsoon trough will extend from the southeastern Gulf of Carpentaria
to the tropical coast near Cairns, with scattered shower and thunderstorm
activity continuing over the northern tropics. The upper level low along with a
surface low with continue to produce scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over the southern tropics, central districts and the northern Wide
Bay. The trough over southwestern Queensland will weaken with only isolated
showers and possible thunderstorms expected. Morning drizzle areas and isolated
showers in the southeast and southern inland.
Forecast for Friday
A weak monsoon trough will continue to extend from the southeastern Gulf of
Carpentaria to the tropical coast near Cairns, with scattered shower and
thunderstorm activity continuing over most of the northern tropics. The weakened
upper level low will continue to produce scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over the southern tropics and central districts. Mostly fine over
southeastern parts of the state, only isolated showers.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
Showers and thunderstorms should continue over the tropics due to a weak
monsoon trough with some locally heavy falls likely. Mostly fine conditions
expected elsewhere, though showers may increase about the east coast again from
Sunday due to another trough moving west from the Coral Sea. A new trough will
also most likely move slowly east over the southern interior, producing a band
of showers and thunderstorms that may reach the eastern interior by late Monday.
