MELBOURNE - Feb 10/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for parts of the North Tropical Coast district. Flood warnings are current for the Dawson, Balonne, Nicholson, Flinders and Norman Rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1028 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east coast. A trough over Cape York Peninsula is moving gradually to the west. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Rain areas, showers and isolated thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls about parts of the North Tropical Coast [see Severe Weather Warning]. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the remainder of the coastal districts within the tropics, and also in the far west of the state. Fine over the remainder except for some isolated showers about the southeast coast and central interior. Moderate SE to NE winds on the east coast, tending light to moderate inland. Forecast for Friday The high will move to the south of New Zealand, with a weakening ridge along the east Queensland coast. Mostly fine conditions are expected over the southern, southeast and central interior, with just a few isolated showers along the southeast and Capricornia coasts due to moist onshore winds. The trough over the northern tropics will shift west into the Gulf of Carpentaria with rain areas, showers and isolated thunderstorms and moderate to heavy falls continuing about the far northern tropics and extending over Cape York Peninsula. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southern tropics and the Central Coast. Forecast for Saturday The ridge along the east coast will continue to weaken with isolated showers along the southern east coast and fine conditions over the southern interior. Mostly fine with just a few isolated showers through remaining central parts. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the southern tropics. Deep, moist E'ly winds will maintain rain areas, showers and thunderstorms with possible heavy falls over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. Forecast for Sunday A weak ridge and isolated showers should persist over the southeast coast. A surface trough will bring just a few isolated showers or storms to the far southwest, though conditions should be mainly fine within the region. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the tropics and northwest with isolated thunderstorms extending to inland parts of the Capricornia district as an upper trough develops over the Coral Sea. Mostly fine with isolated showers for remaining central parts. Forecast for Monday The upper trough in the Coral Sea should encourage showers to increase about the southeast and central coastal coasts, while more humid easterly winds flowing out of a new high in the Tasman sea will also cause showers to increase about the southeast interior. Mainly fine about the central districts, isolated showers about the northern tropics, and rain easing about the far northern tropics. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The high should remain in the Tasman Sea and continue extending more humid easterly winds over southern Queensland and further increases in shower activity about the southeast coast district early in the outlook period. A weak surface trough should also extend from the southern interior through the central parts of the state and up to the northwest district early in the outlook period, producing scattered showers and isolated storms near and to the east of the trough. Isolated showers over the tropics, tending scattered with possible storms about the Gulf Country and Cape York Peninsula. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
