Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 7/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Double Island Point and Point Danger, including Moreton Bay.
A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for coastal waters between Sandy Cape and
Double Island Point for Tuesday afternoon and evening.
A Severe Weather Warning is current for flash flooding for the Maranoa and
Warrego District, the far eastern Channel Country and the western Darling Downs
and Granite Belt district for Tuesday.
Flood warnings are current for the Balonne River, Burdekin River system, Connors
and Isaac Rivers and the Gulf Rivers.

Weather Situation
A slow moving surface trough lies over the southern interior of Queensland.
An upper level trough lies over northern New South Wales and is expected to
intensify and move north into southern Queensland on Tuesday. A large high lies
over the Great Australian Bight and is expected to move east towards
southeastern Australia on Tuesday.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy falls over the
southern interior and over the east tropical coast and adjacent inland north of
Bowen. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and
northwestern Queensland. Isolated showers elsewhere with possible isolated
thunderstorms over the central interior. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds along
the east coast, strong at times south of Double Island Point. Light to moderate
SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms south of about Mount Isa to
Gladstone, increasing to thundery rain areas from the south with some moderate
falls, locally heavy over the far eastern Channel Country, the Maranoa and
Warrego and western parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district [refer
to Severe Weather Warning].  Mostly fine over remaining central districts with
only isolated showers and the chance of inland thunderstorms. Scattered showers
and thunderstorms over the Peninsula and Gulf Country districts. Scattered
showers along the tropical east coast with the chance of isolated thunderstorms
inland. A cool day over southern parts of the state. Moderate to fresh S to SE
winds along the east coast, strong at times south of Fraser Island. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds inland.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move east into the Tasman Sea, extending a firm ridge into
eastern Queensland. Both the upper level trough and surface trough are expected
to extend over the southern interior of the state at first before weakening and
shifting west as the ridge builds. Thundery rain areas with moderate to locally
heavy falls are expected over inland parts southwest of about Mount Isa to
Emerald, contracting into the Channel Country during the afternoon and evening.
A cool day over the southern and central interior under cloud. Early patchy rain
areas and local thunder is expected over southeastern parts of the state, easing
to isolated showers from the south during the morning. Conditions will remain
unstable through the tropics with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
expected, increasing to thundery rain areas over northern Cape York Peninsula
due to a weak trough in the area.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will move southeast towards New Zealand, maintaining a ridge along
the east Queensland coast. A trough will persist near the Northern Territory
border, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms expected over far
western parts of Queensland. Isolated showers are expected over southeastern
Queensland in the moist onshore flow. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms are expected over central districts north of about Rockhampton and
through the northwest and tropical interior. A weak trough will persist over the
northeastern tropics, generating rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to
possibly locally heavy falls
Forecast for Friday
The high will move to the south of New Zealand, maintaining a ridge along the
east Queensland coast. Mostly fine conditions are expected over the southern and
central interior under the stabilising influence of the ridge, with isolated
showers along the southeast and Capricorn coasts in the moist onshore wind flow.
The trough over the northeast tropics will shift west into the Gulf of
Carpentaria. A deep, moist NE'ly wind flow will maintain showers and
thunderstorms with moderate to possibly locally heavy falls over the area
however. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue over northwestern
Queensland.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The high will move southeast, weakening the ridge further over the weekend.
Conditions will remain unstable over the northern tropics with scattered showers
and isolated thunderstorms continuing. A trough system is likely to affect the
southwest from late Saturday or early Sunday, with a band of showers and
thunderstorms moving slowly east across the southern interior during Sunday and
Monday. Isolated showers are expected to continue along the east coast in the
onshore flow.
