Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 6/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for coastal waters
between Cape Moreton and Point Danger for Monday.
Flood warnings are current for the Balonne River, Burdekin River system, Connors
and Isaac Rivers and the Gulf Rivers.

Weather Situation
A tropical low [Ex-Tropical Cyclone Yasi] lies over the southern Northern
Territory and is expected to continue moving slowly west. A surface trough
extends from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Yasi across far southwest Queensland and into
New South Wales, and is expected to move north across the southern interior of
Queensland during today. A high near northern New Zealand extends a ridge of
high pressure off the southern Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Areas of rain and thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula and about
the north tropical coast and ranges with moderate to heavy falls. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms across the remainder of the state, with
patchy thundery rain developing over the southern interior overnight. Moderate E
to NE winds along the east coast, shifting NE to NW over the interior ahead of a
fresh and gusty SE change over the southwest.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough will persist over the southern interior while a fresh and
gusty S/SE wind change will move along the southern Queensland coast as the
large high moves across the Southern Ocean. Thundery rain areas will persist
near the trough over the southern interior, increasing at night due to an upper
level trough approaching the area from New South Wales. Scattered showers and
inland thunderstorms over the southeast. A moist, unstable E to NE flow will
produce isolated shower and thunderstorm activity over the remainder of the
state, more widespread over the northern tropics.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper level trough will most likely move off the New South Wales coast
and intensify, extending back into the Queensland southeastern interior.
Thundery rain areas should therefore extend north over southern and western
districts during the day, with moderate to locally heavy falls expected near the
trough over the southern interior. A cool day under the cloud in the south. A
ridge of high pressure will result in mostly fine conditions over central
districts with only isolated showers and possible thunderstorms expected. An
unstable airflow about the tropical coast will continue to produce showers and
isolated thunderstorms with scattered showers and thunderstorms about the far
northern tropics and far northwest of the state. The new large high should move
over southeastern Australia, maintaining the fresh to strong S/SE wind flow
along the southern coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high is likely to move over the Tasman Sea, extending the firm ridge over
the Queensland coast while the surface trough is expected to move back towards
southwest Queensland. The upper trough is expected to move north and should
contract the thundery rain areas into central districts before weakening
overnight. Isolated showers will persist over the southeast and southern
interior in the wake of the rain band. A cool day over the southern and central
interior under cloud. Continuing unstable with scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over the tropics, increasing to rain areas and isolated
thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula due to a trough or weak low
offshore moving west.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will move to the southeast of New Zealand with the ridge along the
east coast weakening a little during the day. Isolated showers about the
southern coast and adjacent inland, with scattered showers about the central
coast. The surface trough over the far southwest should generate further showers
and thunderstorms. Conditions will remain unstable over the tropics and through
northwestern Queensland with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
continuing. Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York
Peninsula as the trough or weak low moves into and over the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high southeast of New Zealand will continue to extend the weakening ridge
along the east Queensland coast with generally isolated showers, extending into
the eastern interior in the afternoons. Conditions will remain unstable over the
northern tropics with scattered showers and thunderstorms continuing. A new
trough system is likely to affect the southwest from Saturday with a band of
showers and thunderstorms, moving slowly east across the southern interior
during Sunday.
