Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 3/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Severe Weather Warning is current for flash flooding for
coastal areas from Mossman to Ayr including Cairns and Townsville. A separate
severe weather warning is current for damaging winds and flash flooding for
parts of the Northwest, Gulf Country, Northern Goldfields, Central West and
Channel Country districts.
Various flood warnings are current.

Weather Situation
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Yasi lies west of Mt Isa as a tropical low and is
expected to continue moving west southwest into the Northern Territory during
Friday morning. A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge of high pressure along
the southern Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Rain areas and thunderstorms through far western parts and the Gulf Country,
with locally heavy falls likely north of about Boulia. Rain areas and
thunderstorms with locally heavy falls also over the northeast tropics, easing
late in the day. Mostly fine conditions over southeastern Queensland with only
isolated showers and morning drizzle areas. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
over central districts north of Emerald. Damaging wind gusts should persist
through the Northwest District and the western Channel Country on the southern
edge of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Yasi. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds along the
east coast, tending N to NE over the interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The remnants of Cyclone Yasi should remain slow moving over the Northern
Territory while a deep trough will move east over South Australia. Unstable and
humid N to NE winds will continue to extend into northwestern Queensland and
northern Cape York Peninsula, generating rain areas and thunderstorms with at
least moderate falls likely. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
elsewhere over the tropics. The high in the Tasman Sea will move a little south,
dragging a deep, moist NE'ly windflow into central and southeastern districts
with an increase in showers and the possibility of afternoon or evening
thunderstorms. Mostly fine conditions over the southern interior with only very
isolated showers or thunderstorms expected.
Forecast for Sunday
The trough over South Australia should move east over New South Wales,
extending north into the southern interior and greatly increasing instability. A
deep, moist N to NE flow will extend over much of the state with scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms, increasing to thundery rain areas near the
trough over the far southern interior.
Forecast for Monday
The trough will persist over the southern interior while a fresh S'ly wind
change will move north through far southern Queensland waters. Unstable
conditions will persist over much of the state with showers and thunderstorms
expected, more isolated over central districts and the southeast. Thundery rain
areas with possible moderate falls are likely near the trough over the southern
interior.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
An upper level trough will move north over New South Wales and into southern
Queensland on Wednesday. Thundery rain areas should persist over the southern
interior on Tuesday before extending into southeastern Queensland on Wednesday
as the upper trough approaches. Thundery rain should then contract north with
the upper trough into central parts of the state on Thursday. Showers and
isolated thunderstorms will persist in a moist and unstable airflow over
remaining parts of the state, particularly in the northeastern tropics.
