Weather Situation
Tropical Cyclone Yasi is now a category 1 system over the northern interior
and is expected to continue moving west southwest towards Mount Isa while slowly
weakening. The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Yasi are then expected to move west
into the Northern Territory on Friday, though damaging wind gusts could continue
through far western parts of Queensland on the southern edge of the system. A
high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge of high pressure along the southern
Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Tropical Cyclone Yasi is generating damaging wind gusts over the tropical
interior and western districts north of about Blackall and gradually extending
west to the Northern Territory border. Rain areas and thunderstorms are
continuing over the tropical coast with locally heavy falls persisting in the
wake of Tropical Cyclone Yasi. Rain squalls are extending west through the
interior north of about Longreach with possible locally heavy falls. Patchy rain
areas and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere over the interior north and west of
Charleville. Mostly fine conditions over southeastern Queensland with only
isolated showers and morning drizzle areas near the coast. Showers and
thunderstorms with some heavy falls over Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh
NW to NE winds over the east coast and through the southeast.
Forecast for Friday
Rain areas and thunderstorms through far western parts, with locally heavy
falls likely north of Boulia. Rain areas and thunderstorms with locally heavy
falls also over the northeast tropics. Mostly fine conditions over southeastern
Queensland with only isolated showers and morning drizzle areas expected. Patchy
rain areas and thunderstorms over central districts north of Emerald, easing to
isolated showers during the day. Damaging wind gusts gradually easing over the
Gulf Country as the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Yasi contract into the Northern
Territory, though damaging wind gusts should persist through the Northwest
District and the western Channel Country on the southern edge of the system.
Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds along the east coast, tending N to NE over the
interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The remnants of Cyclone Yasi should remain slow moving over the Northern
Territory while a deep trough will move east over South Australia. Unstable and
humid N to NE winds will continue to extend into northwestern Queensland and
northern Cape York Peninsula, generating rain areas and thunderstorms with at
least moderate falls likely. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
elsewhere over the tropics. The high in the Tasman Sea will move a little south,
dragging a deep, moist NE'ly windflow into central and southeastern districts
with an increase in showers expected and the possibility of afternoon or evening
thunderstorms. Mostly fine conditions over the southern interior with only very
isolated showers or thunderstorms expected.
Forecast for Sunday
The trough over South Australia should move east over New South Wales,
extending north into the southern interior and greatly increasing instability. A
deep, moist N to NE flow will extend over much of the state with scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms, increasing to thundery rain areas near the
trough over the southern interior.
Forecast for Monday
The trough will persist over the southern interior while a fresh S'ly wind
change will most likely move north into far southern Queensland waters. Unstable
conditions will persist over much of the state with showers and thunderstorms
expected, more isolated over central districts and the southeast. Thundery rain
areas with possible moderate falls are likely near the trough over the southern
interior.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
An upper level trough will most likely move north over New South Wales and
into southern Queensland on Wednesday. Thundery rain areas should persist over
the southern interior on Tuesday before extending into southeastern Queensland
on Wednesday as the upper trough approaches. Thundery rain should then contract
north with the upper trough into central parts of the state on Thursday. Showers
and isolated thunderstorms will persist in a moist and unstable airflow over
remaining parts of the state, particularly in the northeastern tropics.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
