Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends from northern Cape York Peninsula to Severe
Tropical Cyclone Yasi in the Coral Sea. Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is a large
and very dangerous system and poses an extremely serious threat to life and
property within the warning area, particularly between Cairns and Townsville.
Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is expected to cross the tropical coast near
Innisfail late tonight or early Thursday and is then expected to move west
southwest over northern inland parts while slowly weakening, reaching
northwestern Queensland by Thursday evening. The tropical interior and western
districts north of about Blackall could also experience damaging wind gusts and
heavy rain during Thursday. A high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge into
southern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is moving west southwest towards the Queensland
coast and is expected to cross the tropical coast near Innisfail later tonight
or early Thursday with extremely severe impacts [refer to warnings]. Squally
rain areas are increasing about the tropical coast and adjacent inland parts and
will continue to do so as the cyclone approaches with very heavy falls
developing. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula,
northwestern Queensland and the far southern Channel Country. Mostly fine
elsewhere over southern Queensland with only isolated showers. Showers and
isolated thunderstorms increasing about the tropical and central interior north
of Emerald. Dangerous surf conditions and abnormally high tides along the coast
south of the Cyclone Warning area to the New South Wales border, particularly
between Sarina and the Sunshine Coast.
Forecast for Thursday
Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is expected to track rapidly west southwest over
inland Queensland and gradually weaken, generating damaging to destructive wind
gusts and heavy rain areas over the interior north of Winton and extending to
the Northern Territory border later in the day. Damaging winds gusts and
thundery rain areas should also develop about remaining inland parts north of
about Birdsville to Blackall during the day. Heavy rain squalls and destructive
winds will gradually ease about the tropical and central coasts as the system
shifts inland. Mostly fine conditions over southeastern Queensland under the
influence of the ridge with only isolated showers and morning drizzle areas near
the coast. Showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere over central Queensland
and the southern interior. Dangerous swells gradually easing about the east
coast during the day.
Forecast for Friday
The remnants of Cyclone Yasi will move into the Northern Territory. Damaging
wind gusts will continue over far western Queensland though they should
gradually ease in the northwest. Rain areas will also persist through far
western parts, with locally heavy falls likely north of Boulia. Rain areas and
thunderstorms will continue in the moist N to NE flow over the tropics and
through the central interior north of Longreach with some locally heavy falls,
particularly near the tropical coast. Thundery rain will gradually ease to
showers on the central coast. Mostly fine conditions will persist over
southeastern Queensland under the influence of a ridge with only isolated
showers expected.
Forecast for Saturday
The remnants of Cyclone Yasi should remain slow moving over the Northern
Territory while a deep trough will move east over South Australia. Unstable and
humid N to NE winds will continue to extend into western parts of Queensland and
Cape York Peninsula, generating rain areas and thunderstorms with at least
moderate falls likely. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere
over the tropics and central districts. The high in the Tasman Sea will move a
little south, dragging a deep, moist NE'ly windflow into southeastern districts
with an increase in showers expected and the possibility of afternoon or evening
thunderstorms. Mostly fine conditions over the southern interior with only very
isolated showers or thunderstorms expected.
Forecast for Sunday
The trough over South Australia should move east over New South Wales,
increasing instability over the southern interior of Queensland. A deep, moist N
to NE flow will extend over much of the state with scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms, increasing to thundery rain areas near the western
border to the continued influence of Ex Tropical Cyclone Yasi.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The trough over New South Wales will most likely move into southern
Queensland and persist through southeastern parts of the state on Tuesday before
moving north into central parts of the state late Wednesday. Unstable conditions
will persist over much of the state scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
continuing, becoming more widespread with patchy rain areas near the trough over
southern Queensland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
