MELBOURNE - Feb 2/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Cyclone Warning is current for coastal and island communities from Cape Flattery to Sarina, extending west across the tropical interior to the Northern Territory border. Coastal waters wind warnings are current for coastal areas between Cape Melville and St Lawrence. A Severe Weather Warning is current for dangers surf and abnormally high tides for coastal areas from Sarina to the Sunshine Coast. Various flood warnings are current. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough extends from northern Cape York Peninsula to Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi in the Coral Sea. Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is a large and very dangerous system and poses an extremely serious threat to life and property within the warning area, particularly between Cairns and Townsville. Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is expected to cross the tropical coast near Innisfail late tonight or early Thursday and is then expected to move west southwest over northern inland parts while slowly weakening, reaching northwestern Queensland by Thursday evening. The tropical interior and western districts north of about Blackall could also experience damaging wind gusts and heavy rain during Thursday. A high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge into southern Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is moving west southwest towards the Queensland coast and is expected to cross the tropical coast near Innisfail later tonight or early Thursday with extremely severe impacts [refer to warnings]. Squally rain areas are increasing about the tropical coast and adjacent inland parts and will continue to do so as the cyclone approaches with very heavy falls developing. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula, northwestern Queensland and the far southern Channel Country. Mostly fine elsewhere over southern Queensland with only isolated showers. Showers and isolated thunderstorms increasing about the tropical and central interior north of Emerald. Dangerous surf conditions and abnormally high tides along the coast south of the Cyclone Warning area to the New South Wales border, particularly between Sarina and the Sunshine Coast. Forecast for Thursday Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is expected to track rapidly west southwest over inland Queensland and gradually weaken, generating damaging to destructive wind gusts and heavy rain areas over the interior north of Winton and extending to the Northern Territory border later in the day. Damaging winds gusts and thundery rain areas should also develop about remaining inland parts north of about Birdsville to Blackall during the day. Heavy rain squalls and destructive winds will gradually ease about the tropical and central coasts as the system shifts inland. Mostly fine conditions over southeastern Queensland under the influence of the ridge with only isolated showers and morning drizzle areas near the coast. Showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere over central Queensland and the southern interior. Dangerous swells gradually easing about the east coast during the day. Forecast for Friday The remnants of Cyclone Yasi will move into the Northern Territory. Damaging wind gusts will continue over far western Queensland though they should gradually ease in the northwest. Rain areas will also persist through far western parts, with locally heavy falls likely north of Boulia. Rain areas and thunderstorms will continue in the moist N to NE flow over the tropics and through the central interior north of Longreach with some locally heavy falls, particularly near the tropical coast. Thundery rain will gradually ease to showers on the central coast. Mostly fine conditions will persist over southeastern Queensland under the influence of a ridge with only isolated showers expected. Forecast for Saturday The remnants of Cyclone Yasi should remain slow moving over the Northern Territory while a deep trough will move east over South Australia. Unstable and humid N to NE winds will continue to extend into western parts of Queensland and Cape York Peninsula, generating rain areas and thunderstorms with at least moderate falls likely. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere over the tropics and central districts. The high in the Tasman Sea will move a little south, dragging a deep, moist NE'ly windflow into southeastern districts with an increase in showers expected and the possibility of afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Mostly fine conditions over the southern interior with only very isolated showers or thunderstorms expected. Forecast for Sunday The trough over South Australia should move east over New South Wales, increasing instability over the southern interior of Queensland. A deep, moist N to NE flow will extend over much of the state with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, increasing to thundery rain areas near the western border to the continued influence of Ex Tropical Cyclone Yasi. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The trough over New South Wales will most likely move into southern Queensland and persist through southeastern parts of the state on Tuesday before moving north into central parts of the state late Wednesday. Unstable conditions will persist over much of the state scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms continuing, becoming more widespread with patchy rain areas near the trough over southern Queensland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
