MELBOURNE - Jan 31/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Cyclone Watch is current between Cooktown and Yeppoon. A flood warning is current for coastal rivers from Townsville to Mackay, for the Don River and adjacent streams, for the Pioneer, Fitzroy, Condamine-Balonne Rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough extends from Cape York Peninsula to Tropical Cyclone Yasi in the Coral Sea. The cyclone is expected to impact upon the central-northeast coastal districts of Queensland during Wednesday night or Thursday morning, and then move rapidly into the state's interior while weakening into a rain depression during Thursday. A high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge into southern Queensland, whilst the ex-Tropical Cyclone Anthony is now a low pressure system, and is expected to move rapidly from the Central West to the Channel Country over the next 24 hours Forecast for the rest of Monday Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected over the tropics, with slightly more widespread activity about the Central Highlands. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Anthony is expected to produce gusty showers with some moderate local falls as it moves from the Central West to the Southwest. Mainly fine elsewhere except for some isolated showers about the coast. Forecast for Tuesday The low that was cyclone Anthony is expected to cause some locally moderate and gusty falls about the Channel Country. Mainly fine about the Darling Downs and Maranoa under the influence of a ridge extending out from a high over the Tasman Sea, though some very isolated afternoon and evening showers and storms are possible. Mainly isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected over the remainder of the state, tending more widespread about the central and northeast coasts, and increasing about the southeast coast during the evening. Tropical Cyclone Yasi is expected to be moving west over the central Coral Sea region, but still well offshore. Forecast for Wednesday The low that was cyclone Anthony should cause some moderate falls during the morning about the far southwest. The southern and central interior of the state should remain mainly fine under the influence of a strong ridge extending out of a high over the Tasman Sea, though some isolated afternoon showers and storms are possible. Isolated showers and storms should continue over the remainder of the state as the atmosphere remains moist and unstable, with some more widespread showers and possible storms about the southeastern districts at least during the morning. Showers and thunderstorms are also expected to increase to thundery rain areas during the day about the east coast and nearby inland between about Cooktown and Bundaberg with strong to possibly gale force winds developing about the coast during the morning due to the approach of Tropical Cyclone Yasi. Swells increasing about the east coast [including in the southeast], breaking dangerously inshore about the central and northeast coast. Forecast for Thursday Tropical Cyclone Yasi is likely to make landfall on Queensland's central or northeast coast as a large and strong system, causing very heavy rainfall, destructive winds, high ocean waves and dangerous rises in sea level near the coast. The system is expected to weaken as it moves during the day, however it still may produce gales with moderate to heavy falls as it moves inland, possibly reaching the central interior by midnight. Isolated showers and isolated thunderstorms over the west and southern parts of the state, and also over Cape York Peninsula. Scattered showers about the northeast and central coasts and nearby inland areas. Dangerous swells about the east coast [including the southeast]. Forecast for Friday The remains of cyclone Yasi should move into the far southwest of the state, producing gusty showers and rain areas with at least moderate falls possible. Scattered showers and isolated storms in the humid NW to NE winds over the tropical regions of the state, with at least some moderate falls possible about the northeast and Gulf Country coasts. Isolated showers about the southeast, and very isolated showers about the southern interior. Dangerous swells continuing about the east coast [including the southeast]. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday Tropical Cyclone Yasi should move out of the state early in the weekend, with early moderate falls and gusty winds in the Channel Country easing during Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms should continue elsewhere through the tropics and the interior due to the moist, unstable airflow. Isolated showers should persist over much of the remainder of the state. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
