Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 27/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak monsoon trough extends from Torres Strait to Ex Tropical Cyclone
Anthony over the central Coral Sea. Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony is expected to
take on a more north northwest movement over the Coral Sea today. This system
may re-develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 12 to 24 hours. A high will
move east into the Tasman Sea this evening, strengthening a ridge along the east
Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf
Country. Mostly fine along the northeast tropical coast with only isolated
showers during the morning. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the central
and southeast interior and also through western districts, chiefly during the
afternoon and evening. Isolated showers developing about the southeast coast
later in the day. Fine elsewhere. Hot over western districts and the
southeastern interior. Moderate to fresh mostly SE to NE winds.
Forecast for Saturday
Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony is expected to remain over the northwestern Coral
Sea and will most likely be at cyclone strength. The high will move east over
the Tasman Sea, extending a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. The
resultant fresh to strong onshore wind flow will increase showers along the east
coast and nearby inland, and bring cooler temperatures to the state's southeast.
Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the northern tropics.
Mostly fine conditions elsewhere with just the chance of isolated showers or
thunderstorms over the central interior. Daytime temperatures remaining very
warm to hot in the west.
Forecast for Sunday
The forecast for the tropical coast depends heavily on the movement and
intensity of Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony. At this stage Ex Tropical Cyclone
Anthony is likely to be at tropical cyclone strength over the northwestern Coral
Sea. The system will possibly commence a more south-westward track towards the
tropical coast during the day and warnings will be issued as necessary. Showers
and isolated thunderstorms are likely to increase to thundery rain areas along
the east tropical and central coasts during the day. Showers and thunderstorms
are also expected over northwestern Queensland and Cape York Peninsula. The high
will persist over the Tasman Sea and continue to direct isolated showers along
the southern Queensland coast and eastern interior.
Forecast for Monday
The forecast for central and northern Queensland depends heavily on the
movement and intensity of Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony. There is a possibility of
the system crossing the tropical coast overnight Sunday/Monday morning and
warnings with detailed information on the expected location and timing of the
crossing will be issued as necessary. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are
expected over the far northern tropics. Rain areas and thunderstorms are
expected elsewhere along the tropical and central coasts and should also extend
inland into the tropical and central interior. Cloud should increase over
western Queensland with patchy light rain and isolated thunderstorms developing
later in the day. Mostly fine conditions in the southeast with only isolated
showers expected.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
Showers and thunderstorms should continue through the tropics and also over
much of the interior due to a moist, unstable airflow. Instability should also
increase over southeastern Queensland from Wednesday with showers and possible
isolated thunderstorms expected. There is some potential for a new low to deepen
over the Coral Sea during the outlook period and warnings will be issued as
necessary.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
