MELBOURNE - Jan 27/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak monsoon trough extends from Torres Strait to Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony over the central Coral Sea. Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony is expected to move west northwest over the Coral Sea before taking a northwards path over the Coral Sea on Friday. This system may re-develop into a tropical cyclone on Friday. A high over the Tasman Sea extends a weak ridge along the east Queensland coast. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Isolated showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country, and about the southern interior. Isolated showers along the east coast north of about Mackay. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times near the coast. Forecast for Friday Isolated showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. Isolated afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms in the central and southern inland parts. Isolated showers about the tropical coasts, and developing late in the southeast corner. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times about the coast. Forecast for Saturday Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony is likely to remain over the northwestern Coral Sea and likely be at cyclone strength. The new high will move east over the Tasman Sea, extending a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. The resultant fresh onshore wind flow will increase showers along the east coast and nearby inland, and bring cooler temperatures to the state's southeast. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the northern tropics. Mostly fine conditions elsewhere with just the chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms over the central interior. Daytime temperatures remaining very warm to hot in the west. Forecast for Sunday The forecast for the tropical coast depends heavily on the movement and intensity of Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony. At this stage Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony is likely to be at tropical cyclone strength and be located over the northwestern Coral Sea. There is some possibility of the cyclone commencing a more south-westward track towards the tropical coast and warnings will be issued as necessary. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely to increase to thundery rain areas along the east tropical and central coast during the day. Showers and thunderstorms are also expected over northwestern Queensland and Cape York Peninsula. The high will persist over the Tasman Sea and continue to direct isolated showers along the southern Queensland coast and eastern interior. Forecast for Monday The forecast for the tropical coast depends heavily on the movement and intensity of Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony. At this stage the Ex Tropical Cyclone is likely to be at tropical cyclone strength and heading towards the coast. The crossing point will be refined over the coming days as the system develops. Showers and thunderstorms, tending to rain areas, are expected for most parts of the tropical and central coastal and inland parts, spreading westwards through the day. Isolated showers about the southeast. Fine in the west and far south. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The forecast for the outlook period is dependent on the movement and intensity of Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony. An onshore wind flow will continue to push showers onto the east coast and adjacent inland, possibly increasing to rain areas over parts of the tropics and central interior. The southeastern corner of the state is not likely to be affected by Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony with isolated showers continuing and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms increasing mid week. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
