Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 26/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak monsoon trough extends from Torres Strait to Ex Tropical Cyclone
Anthony over the central Coral Sea. Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony is expected to
move west northwest over the Coral Sea today before taking on a northwards path
over the Coral Sea on Friday. This system may re-develop into a tropical cyclone
later today or Friday. A high over the Tasman Sea extends a weak ridge along the
east Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf
Country. Isolated showers developing about the east tropical coast and adjacent
inland. Possible isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms over the southern
interior though with little or no rain. Fine elsewhere. Very warm to hot over
western districts and the southeastern interior. Light to moderate SE to NE
winds, fresh at times near the coast.
Forecast for Friday
A surface trough will extend over inland Queensland and cause isolated
afternoon showers and thunderstorms over the central and southeast interior. Ex
Tropical Cyclone Anthony may have reintensified over the Coral Sea and
advisories or warnings will be issued as necessary. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms will continue over the far northern tropics, with isolated showers
also about the northeast tropical coast. Isolated showers will also develop
about the southeast coast late in the day as a new high moves into the Tasman
Sea and strengthens the ridge along the east Queensland coast. Fine conditions
elsewhere except for just the chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms over
the southwest. Hot daytime temperatures continuing over southern and western
Queensland.
Forecast for Saturday
The forecast for the tropical coast depends heavily on the movement and
intensity of Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony. Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony is likely
to remain over the northwestern Coral Sea and possibly be at cyclone strength.
The new high will move east over the Tasman Sea, extending a firm ridge along
the east Queensland coast. The resultant fresh onshore wind flow will increase
showers along the east coast and nearby inland, and bring cooler temperatures to
the state's southeast. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the
northern tropics. Mostly fine conditions elsewhere with just the chance of
isolated showers or thunderstorms over the central interior. Daytime
temperatures remaining very warm to hot in the west.
Forecast for Sunday
The forecast for the tropical coast depends heavily on the movement and
intensity of Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony. At this stage Ex Tropical Cyclone
Anthony is likely to be at tropical cyclone strength and be located over the
northwestern Coral Sea. There is some possibility of the cyclone commencing a
more westward track towards the tropical coast and warnings will be issued as
necessary. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely to increase to thundery
rain areas along the east tropical and central coast during the day. Showers and
thunderstorms are also expected over northwestern Queensland and Cape York
Peninsula. The high will persist over the Tasman Sea and continue to direct
isolated showers along the southern Queensland coast and eastern interior.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The forecast for the outlook period is dependent on the movement and
intensity of Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony. An onshore wind flow will continue to
push showers onto the east coast and adjacent inland, possibly increasing to
rain areas over parts of the tropics and central interior. The southeastern
corner of the state is not likely to be affected by Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony
with isolated showers continuing and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms
increasing mid week.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
