Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 25/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak monsoon trough extends from northern Cape York Peninsula to Ex
Tropical Cyclone Anthony over the eastern Coral Sea. Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony
is expected to move west northwest over the Coral Sea over the next few days.
This system may re-develop into a tropical cyclone late in the week. A high over
the Tasman Sea extends a weak ridge along the east Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula. Mostly fine over
remaining parts of the tropics with only very isolated a light showers about the
North Tropical Coast. Continuing fine elsewhere. Hot over western districts and
the southeastern interior with light to moderate NW to NE winds. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times near the east coast.
Forecast for Thursday
The monsoon trough will extend from Torres Strait to a low over the central
Coral Sea [Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony] which has a moderate chance of
reintensifying into a tropical cyclone. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
should continue over Cape York Peninsula, and extend over the Gulf Country.
Isolated showers are also expected about the northeast tropical coast and nearby
inland areas. Fine elsewhere apart from the chance of isolated afternoon showers
or thunderstorms near a weak trough about the southern inland border. Daytime
temperatures will remain well above the January average over western districts
and the southeastern interior.
Forecast for Friday
A surface trough should extend over inland Queensland and cause isolated
afternoon showers and thunderstorms over the central and southeast interior. Ex
Tropical Cyclone Anthony may have reintensified over the Coral Sea and
advisories or warnings will be issued as necessary. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms will continue over the far northern tropics, with isolated showers
also about the northeast coast. Fine conditions elsewhere except for just the
chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms over the southwest. Hot daytime
temperatures continuing over southern and western Queensland.
Forecast for Saturday
The forecast for the tropical coast depends heavily on the movement and
intensity of Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony. At this stage the most likely scenario
is for Ex Tropical Cyclone Anthony to remain over the northwestern Coral Sea and
possibly be at cyclone strength. A new high will move into the Tasman Sea,
strengthening the ridge along the east Queensland coast. The resultant fresh
onshore wind flow will increase showers along the east coast and nearby inland,
and bring cooler temperatures to the state's southeast. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms are expected over the northern tropics. Mostly fine conditions
elsewhere with just the chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms over central
parts of the state. Daytime temperatures will cool over the southeast.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The inland trough should weaken and contract west on Sunday. The forecast for
the tropics is dependent on the movement and intensity of Ex Tropical Cyclone
Anthony. An onshore wind flow will continue to push showers onto the east coast
and adjacent inland, possibly increasing to rain areas over the northern
tropics. Mostly fine conditions over the interior until Tuesday when the chance
of showers or thunderstorms increases.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Wednesday.
