Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 24/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends from the northeast Queensland coast to Tropical
Cyclone Anthony well offshore over the central Coral Sea. Tropical Cyclone
Anthony is expected to become slow moving and remain well offshore over the next
couple of days. A high over the southern Tasman Sea extends a ridge of high
pressure over remaining parts of the state.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Showers and isolated thunderstorms over the tropics north of about Cairns,
increasing to rain areas and thunderstorms north of about Weipa. Mostly fine
over remaining parts of the tropical coast and along the central coast with only
very isolated showers. Fine elsewhere. Moderate SW to NW winds over the far
northern tropics. Light to moderate mostly SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
Showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Peninsula and Gulf Country,
increasing to thundery rain areas through Torres Strait. Mostly fine over
remaining parts of the tropics with only isolated showers. Fine conditions
elsewhere. Daytime temperatures will be above the January average over western
districts and the southeastern interior due to moderate NW to NE winds. Mostly
light SE to NE winds elsewhere, tending SW'ly through Torres Strait.
Forecast for Wednesday
The monsoon trough will most likely persist through far northern Cape York
Peninsula with showers and thunderstorms continuing to its north. More isolated
showers and possible thunderstorms are expected elsewhere over the tropics due
to an upper level low. Mostly fine along the central coast with just the chance
of isolated showers. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere under the influence
of the ridge of high pressure. Temperatures will continue to be above the
January average, particularly daytime temperatures, over western districts and
the southeastern interior.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper level low should weaken and move west out of the state while the
monsoon trough will most likely move north of Torres Strait. Isolated showers
and thunderstorms should continue through the Gulf Country and western parts of
the Peninsula, particularly after the seabreeze in the afternoon. Isolated
showers are expected elsewhere over the tropics and also about central districts
northeast of about Clermont. A weak trough over the southern interior should
increase instability with possible isolated afternoon showers or thunderstorms
near the southern inland border. Fine conditions elsewhere under the influence
of the ridge. Daytime temperatures will remain above average over western
districts and the southeastern interior.
Forecast for Friday
A surface trough will most likely extend over inland Queensland, producing
isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms over the central and southeastern
interior. Tropical Cyclone Anthony [or tropical low] over the Coral Sea will
most likely start to track west towards the Queensland coast though some
uncertainty still exists with its movement and intensity. Isolated showers are
expected over the tropics with possible isolated thunderstorms north and west of
about Cairns. Mostly fine elsewhere with just the chance of isolated showers or
thunderstorms over the southwest. Hot daytime temperatures over southern and
western Queensland.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The inland trough will most likely weaken and contract west over the weekend
as the tropical cyclone or low over the Coral Sea approaches the east Queensland
coast. Some uncertainty exists with the movement of this system but at this
stage the most likely scenario is for it to cross the southern tropical coast as
a tropical low during Saturday and weaken further as it moves inland. Showers
with possible local thunder should increase over eastern and northern parts of
the state due to this approaching low, gradually increasing through western
Queensland as it shifts inland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Tuesday.
