Weather Situation
The monsoon trough lies over the northern tropics of Queensland and is
connected to a developing tropical low east of Cairns. This system is expected
to develop further later today and move east away from the coast. A ridge of
high pressure occurs along the Queensland coast from a high over southern Tasman
Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula with
moderate to heavy falls, moderate SW/NW winds. Decreasing showers and
thunderstorms into the southern tropics. Fine over the interior, rather hot in
the far west, light to moderate SE/NE winds. Isolated showers near the east
coast with moderate to fresh SE winds, tending to strong north of Bowen.
Forecast for Monday
The monsoon trough moves north and showers and thunderstorms decrease over
the tropics. Moderate to heavy falls now in the far north. Remaining dry and hot
over the interior with N/NW winds. Isolated showers about the east coast,
decreasing over the SE coast as the coastal ridge weakens and winds ease.
Forecast for Tuesday
The monsoon trough remains in the far north. Showers and thunderstorms over
Cape York Peninsula, decreasing towards the south. Dry and continuing hot over
the interior as NW winds persist over western districts ahead of a very slow
moving trough. Fine along the SE and Capricorn coasts, isolated coastal showers
further north.
Forecast for Wednesday
An upper level low will move into Queensland from the east across the
southern tropics with showers and thunderstorms developing over the interior.
This development will extend towards the NW district later in the day. Showers
increasing about the central coast and extending inland across the Central
Highlands as isolated afternoon showers. Remaining fine across southern
districts and very hot over the SW.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
By Thursday, the upper level low moves into the Northern Territory with
showers and thunderstorms contracting to the west and the tropics. Showers
generally about the east coast, tending to rain areas on the central coast. By
Friday, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms developing about the NE tropical
coast, with showers along the remainder of the east coast. Becoming fine in the
west. Saturday, rain areas and thunderstorms over the tropics, showers about the
east coast, fine over the interior apart from showers and thunderstorms over the
SE interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Sunday.
