MELBOURNE - Jan 21/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough occurs across the base of Cape York Peninsular with a tropical low. This low is expected to reach the NE coast near Cooktown later on Saturday and develop further. A trough also occurs over western Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Friday Rain areas and thunderstorms increasing over Cape York Peninsula with some heavy falls. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the interior and very isolated showers over the eastern interior. Isolated showers about the east coast. Fine in the far west of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, moderate to fresh near the east coast. Mostly moderate W to NW winds over the tropics. Forecast for Saturday Rain areas and thunderstorms continuing over Cape York Peninsula with some heavy falls. Strong NW winds developing about the NE tropical coast, strong SE winds developing about the southern tropical coast . Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms over the western interior, fine over the southern interior. Isolated showers about the east coast and very isolated late showers across the Central Highlands and Central West districts. Forecast for Sunday The tropical depression crosses the NE tropical coast near Cooktown and continues to move east while intensifying. Heavy rain eases on the NE tropical coast, rain areas and thunderstorms remaining across the northern tropics. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms into the southern tropics, fine over the interior. Isolated showers near the east coast. Forecast for Monday The tropical depression moves further east away from the Queensland coast. Weather continues to decrease over the northern tropics with showers and thunderstorms remaining. Isolated showers near the east coast and fine over the interior. Strong winds will also ease about the NE tropical coast. Forecast for Tuesday The monsoon trough moves north with a continuation of reduced weather over the northern tropics. East coast showers decrease as the coastal ridge weakens and the SE winds ease. Fine over the interior and the SE. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday By Wednesday, an upper level low enters Queensland from the east across the central coast. This will generate showers and thunderstorms over the eastern interior. Showers will also develop down towards the SE coast. Fine further west. By Thursday, the upper level low moves into western Queensland with showers and thunderstorms developing further west. Showers and thunderstorms decreasing over the eastern interior. By Friday the upper level low has moved west into the Northern Territory with showers and thunderstorms now confined to the far west and the tropics. Showers about the east coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
