MELBOURNE - Jan 20/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough extends from over the Northern Territory to the Gulf Country and then to the North Tropical Coast and over the northern Coral Sea. A weak tropical low off the tropical coast. A surface trough extends from northwestern Queensland into the southern Queensland interior. An upper level trough is moving across southeast Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Friday Rain areas, showers and thunderstorms about the tropics. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the northwest, central and southern interior of the state. Isolated showers in the southeast, tending scattered near the coast. Fine in the far southwest. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh to strong near the coast. Mostly moderate W to NW winds in the far north. Forecast for Saturday Mostly fine conditions will continue over southeastern Queensland under the influence of the ridge with only isolated showers expected. Monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms will continue over the northern tropics as the monsoon trough remains strong. A new tropical low is expected to develop off the far northern coast. Scattered showers are expected about the southern tropical and central coasts with possible local thunder. More isolated showers and possible thunderstorms are expected over the southern tropical interior. Mostly fine in the west with just the chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms though with little or no rain. Forecast for Sunday Mostly fine conditions will continue over southern and central Queensland under the influence of the ridge with only isolated showers about the coast. Monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms will continue over the northern tropics associated with the monsoon trough lying over southern Cape York Peninsula. There is a moderate chance that the deepening low over the western Coral Sea may develop into a tropical cyclone, but this is expected to quickly move to the east away from the coast. Fine over the southern interior and most of western Queensland. Forecast for Monday Mostly fine conditions will continue over southern and central Queensland under the influence of the ridge with only isolated showers about the coast. Monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms will continue over the northern tropics associated with the monsoon trough lying over southern Cape York Peninsula and connected to the deep low or tropical cyclone in the Coral Sea which will continue moving east. Fine elsewhere over southern and western Queensland. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Monsoonal rain areas should continue over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. The monsoon trough is likely to remain active over the northern Coral Sea with further weak transient lows possible on the trough during the period. A ridge will most likely dominate weather over much of the remainder of state throughout the outlook period, with isolated showers continuing along the east coast and mostly fine conditions elsewhere. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday.
