Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 19/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends from over the Northern Territory to the Gulf
Country and then to the Herbert and Burdekin coast and over the northern Coral
Sea. A weak tropical low off the tropical coast. A surface trough extends from
northwestern Queensland into the southern Queensland interior. An upper level
trough is moving across southeast Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms with locally heavy falls through much
of the tropics. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere, though
fine over the southwest. Mostly moderate NW to NE winds north of about Mt Isa to
Townsville. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, shifting moderate to fresh E to
SE along the southern coast.
Forecast for Friday
The ridge will extend further north towards the central coast, gradually
stabilising conditions over central and southeast districts. Scattered showers
over southeastern districts and the Capricornia, easing to isolated showers late
in the day as the ridge dominates. The ridge will also contract monsoonal rain
and thunderstorms to areas north of about Cardwell to Normanton as the monsoon
trough continues to strengthen with the weak tropical low persisting over the
northwest Coral Sea. A weak low may also begin to develop over the Gulf of
Carpentaria. Showers and isolated thunderstorms expected elsewhere south of the
monsoon trough.
Forecast for Saturday
Mostly fine conditions will continue over southeastern Queensland under the
influence of the ridge with only isolated showers expected. Monsoonal rain areas
and thunderstorms will continue over the northern tropics as the monsoon trough
remains strong. The tropical low in the Gulf may begin to deepen, while the low
in the Coral Sea may also deepen but move quickly away from the coast as it
interacts with an upper trough to the south. Scattered showers are expected
about the southern tropical and central coasts with possible local thunder. More
isolated showers and possible thunderstorms are expected over the southern
tropical interior. Mostly fine in the west with just the chance of isolated
showers or thunderstorms though with little or no rain.
Forecast for Sunday
Mostly fine conditions will continue over southern and central Queensland
under the influence of the ridge with only isolated showers about the coast.
Monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms will continue over the northern tropics
associated with the monsoon trough lying over southern Cape York Peninsula.
There is a moderate chance that the deepening low over the Gulf of Carpentaria
may develop into a tropical cyclone. Fine over the southern interior and most of
western Queensland.
Forecast for Monday
Mostly fine conditions will continue over southern and central Queensland
under the influence of the ridge with only isolated showers about the coast.
Monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms will continue over the northern tropics
associated with the monsoon trough lying over southern Cape York Peninsula and
connected to the deep low or tropical cyclone over the Gulf of Carpentaria. The
low or cyclone, if it has formed, is likely to remain slow moving at this stage
of development. Fine elsewhere over southern and western Queensland.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
Monsoonal rain areas should continue over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf
Country as the deep low or cyclone most likely moves slowly towards the
southwest towards the Northern Territory. The monsoon trough is likely to remain
active over the northern Coral Sea with further weak transient lows possible on
the trough during the period. A ridge will most likely dominate weather over
much of the remainder of state throughout the outlook period, with isolated
showers continuing along the east coast and mostly fine conditions elsewhere.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
