Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 18/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends over central parts of the Northern Territory to
the Gulf Country. A surface trough extends from northwestern Queensland into the
southeastern interior.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Fine in the southwest. Scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms north
of about Longreach with locally heavy falls possible. Isolated showers and
afternoon and evening thunderstorms elsewhere, spreading to patchy and lighter
rain areas by the evening. Light to moderate and warm to hot NE to NW winds over
the northern half of the state, tending light to moderate S to SE in the
southern half.
Forecast for Wednesday
The monsoon trough is expected to shift southeast to lie over the central
coast, with monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms continuing to its north. A
surface trough should persist from northwestern Queensland into the southeastern
interior, and this combined with an upper level trough should result in
scattered showers and thunderstorms through the northwest, central and southeast
districts, with at least some moderate local falls. Fine and a little cooler in
the southwest in a dry S'ly flow.  Winds elsewhere tending light to moderate NE
to NW'ly and daytime maxima at or below average as cloud cover increases.
Forecast for Thursday
A high will move into the Tasman Sea and gradually extend a ridge along the
southern Queensland coast. Monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms will continue
through much of the tropics. The upper level trough will shift east over
southeastern and central Queensland, maintaining unstable conditions with
scattered showers and thunderstorms expected. Isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms over western districts northeast of about Mount Isa to
Charleville. Remaining fine in the southwest.
Forecast for Friday
The ridge will extend further north towards the central coast, stabilising
conditions over central and southeast districts and resulting in just showers in
the onshore flow about the coastal areas and drizzle about the eastern slopes of
the ranges. The ridge should also push the monsoonal rain and thunderstorm to
the north of about Townsville to Normanton. Isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms elsewhere north of about Mackay to Longreach to Burketown. Fine
elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
The high well to the south of Queensland will produce mainly fine conditions
about the southeast and the southern tropics, except for some isolated light
falls about the east coast and eastern slopes of the ranges.  Monsoonal rain
showers and thunderstorms about the far north in areas north of about
Townsville. Isolated showers and storms about the Central, northern Goldfields
and Central Coast and Whitsunday districts.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
Fine over a lot of the state as the monsoon trough is pushed further to the
north to lie over Cape York Peninsula.   Relatively dry and light to moderate E
to SE flow over most of the state south of the monsoon trough, with the
associated onshore flow bringing just isolated and mainly light showers to the
east coast.  Monsoonal rain, showers and storms continuing over Cape York
Peninsula north of the trough.
