Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 17/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends over central parts of the Northern Territory to
the Gulf Country and then to the northeast tropical coast near Townsville. A
surface trough extends from northwestern Queensland into the southeastern
interior.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Fine in the southwest. Scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms north
of about Longreach with possible locally heavy falls. Isolated showers and
afternoon and evening thunderstorms elsewhere. Light to moderate NE to NW winds
over the northern half of the state, tending mostly S to SE in the southern
half.
Forecast for Wednesday
The monsoon trough is expected to shift a little south to lie near Mackay,
with monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms continuing over northern districts
and extending into far northern parts of central districts. A surface trough
should persist from northwestern Queensland into the southeastern interior, and
this combined with an upper level trough should result in scattered showers and
thunderstorms through the northwest, central and southeast districts. Fine in
the southwest in the continuing dry S'ly flow.
Forecast for Thursday
A high will move into the Tasman Sea and gradually extend a ridge along the
southern Queensland coast. Monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms will continue
through much of the tropics. The upper level trough will shift east over
southeastern and central Queensland, maintaining unstable conditions with
scattered showers and thunderstorms expected. Isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms over western districts northeast of about Mount Isa to
Charleville. Remaining fine in the southwest.
Forecast for Friday
The ridge will extend further north towards the central coast, gradually
stabilising conditions over central and southeast districts. Scattered showers
are expected along the southeast and Capricorn coasts in the onshore SE'ly flow,
tending more isolated further inland. The ridge will contract monsoon rain areas
and thunderstorms to areas north of about Cardwell to Normanton. Isolated
showers and possible thunderstorms elsewhere north of about Mackay to Longreach.
Fine elsewhere.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
Monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms will continue to contract north to be
north of Cairns on Saturday and north of Cooktown by Monday. Isolated showers
will continue about remaining parts of the east coast in the onshore flow.
Mostly fine conditions should continue over the interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
