Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 17/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A weak monsoon flow extends over Cape York Peninsula. A weak surface trough
extends from northwestern Queensland into the southeast interior.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms through the southern half of the state.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the southern tropics, tending to rain
areas in the north. Ocean swells breaking dangerously onshore along coastal
waters south of Sandy Cape, easing overnight. Moderate NW winds in the far
north. Moderate S to SE winds in the Channel Country. Light winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the southern tropics, tending to rain
areas in the far north. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the central and
southeast parts of the state. Light to moderate NE to NW winds, tending S to SE
in the SW of the state.
Forecast for Wednesday
Monsoonal rain and thunderstorms should extend southwards to about Bowen -
Century Mine. A surface trough should persist from northwestern Queensland into
the southeastern interior, and this combined with an upper level trough should
result in scattered showers and thunderstorms through the northwest, central and
southeast districts. Fine in the southwest in the continuing dry S'ly flow.
Forecast for Thursday
A high will move into the Tasman Sea and gradually extend a ridge along the
southern Queensland coast.  The ridge should gradually push the monsoon rain
areas northwards to the Townsville region late in the day.  Unstable conditions
will persist over central and southeastern Queensland ahead of the ridge with
showers and thunderstorms expected. Remaining fine in the southwest.
Forecast for Friday
Monsoon trough will be maintained about the tropics while the ridge is
located along the east coast. Showers, storms and rain areas about the northern
parts of the state, with isolated showers and afternoon thunderstorms in the
southern tropics. The ridge will stabilise conditions in the southeaster
districts, with isolated showers expected.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The ridge to the south of QLD should continue to build and is expected to
push the monsoonal rain and thunderstorm areas to the north of about Cairns.
Isolated showers in the eastern districts generally, fine in the west.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Tuesday.
