MELBOURNE - Jan 16/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak monsoon flow extends over Cape York Peninsula. A weak surface trough extends from northwestern Queensland into the southeast interior. Forecast for the rest of Monday Mainly fine over southeast, central coast and Central Highlands except for some isolated and mainly light afternoon showers and just the chance of some isolated inland thunderstorms. Rain areas and thunderstorms over the northwest, with some moderate to heavy local falls. Fine over the far southwest. Monsoonal rain areas, showers and thunderstorms continuing in the far northern tropics. Ocean swells breaking dangerously onshore along coastal waters south of Sandy Cape, easing overnight. Moderate NW winds in the far north. Moderate S to SE winds in the Channel Country. Light winds elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday A ridge will extend into the southern interior, with the drier S'ly winds resulting in fine conditions over southwestern Queensland. A surface trough will extend from northwestern Queensland through the central interior and into the southeast. The monsoon trough will slip a little further south with monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms expected north of about Townsville to Normanton. Scattered showers and isolated storms over the southern tropics, spreading to rain areas with some moderate to heavy local falls in the west. Showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere. Forecast for Wednesday Monsoonal rain and thunderstorms should extend southwards to about Bowen - Century Mine. A surface trough should persist from northwestern Queensland into the southeastern interior, and this combined with an upper level trough should result in scattered showers and thunderstorms through the northwest, central and southeast districts. Fine in the southwest in the continuing dry S'ly flow. Forecast for Thursday A high will move into the Tasman Sea and gradually extend a ridge along the southern Queensland coast. The ridge should gradually push the monsoon rain areas northwards to the Townsville region late in the day. Unstable conditions will persist over central and southeastern Queensland ahead of the ridge with showers and thunderstorms expected. Remaining fine in the southwest. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The ridge to the south of QLD should continue to build and is expected to push the monsoonal rain and thunderstorm areas to the north of about Cairns by Saturday. The ridge will also stabilise the weather over the southeast coast, southeast interior, and in central parts, with just isolated showers expected about the coast and hinterland south of about Yeppoon. Mostly fine conditions are expected to remain over the southern interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Monday.
