Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends over the northern Queensland tropics to Tropical
Cyclone Zelia well offshore over the central Coral Sea to Ex Tropical Cyclone
Vania over the northern Tasman Sea. Tropical Cyclone Zelia is expected to
continue moving southeast and will not impact the Australian mainland. A surface
trough will extend from northwestern Queensland into the southeastern interior
on Monday.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Monsoonal showers and thunderstorms through the northern tropics with some
locally heavy falls. Patchy rain areas and thunderstorms over western districts
west of about Longreach with possible locally heavy falls with thunderstorms.
Isolated showers and possible late thunderstorms over the southern tropics and
through remaining parts of the interior west of about Emerald to Goondiwindi.
Mostly fine elsewhere with only isolated showers. Large ocean swells over
southern Queensland are producing dangerous surf conditions about the coast
south of Fraser Island. Light to moderate NW winds over the northern tropics.
Light to moderate mostly SE winds elsewhere, tending moderate to fresh S to SE
along the southern coast.
Forecast for Monday
Isolated afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms over southeastern and
southern central parts of the state, chiefly inland. Rain areas and
thunderstorms elsewhere over central Queensland and the southern tropics. Mostly
fine over the far southwest with just the chance of isolated showers or
thunderstorms. Monsoonal rain areas, showers and thunderstorms continuing in the
northern tropics. Ocean swells should ease slightly over southern Queensland.
Moderate NW winds in the far north. Moderate S to SE winds in the Channel
Country. Light winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
A ridge will extend into the southern interior, with the drier S'ly winds
resulting in fine conditions over southwestern Queensland. A surface trough will
extend from northwestern Queensland through the central interior and into the
southeast. The monsoon trough will slip a little further south with monsoonal
rain areas and thunderstorms expected north of about Mackay with some heavy
falls. Showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere, increasing to thundery rain
areas north of about Longreach.
Forecast for Wednesday
Monsoonal rain and thunderstorms and some heavy falls will continue over
northern districts to the north of the monsoon trough which will most likely lie
near Mackay. A surface trough will persist from northwestern Queensland into the
southeastern interior, and this combined with an upper level trough will result
in scattered showers and thunderstorms through the northwest, central and
southeast districts. Fine in the southwest in the continuing dry S'ly flow.
Forecast for Thursday
A high will move into the Tasman Sea and gradually build a ridge towards the
southern Queensland coast. Unstable conditions will persist over central and
southeastern Queensland ahead of the ridge with showers and thunderstorms
expected. The monsoon trough will move north to lie near Townsville by the
evening. Monsoonal rain areas and thunderstorms with some heavy falls will
continue the north of the monsoon trough. Remaining fine in the southwest.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The monsoon trough will continue to move north over the tropics as the ridge
builds to the south, with monsoonal rain and thunderstorms most likely
contracting to north of Cairns by Saturday. Instability persists through central
districts on Friday before the ridge builds into the area, with scattered
showers and possible thunderstorms, easing to isolated showers on Saturday.
Isolated to scattered showers will persist about the southeast through the
outlook period. Mostly fine conditions are expected over the southern
interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Monday.
