Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 14/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends over the northern Queensland tropics to TC Zelia,
which lies to the southeast of Papua New Guinea, and then to TC Vania southeast
of New Caledonia. Both systems are expected to stay well away from the
Queensland coast. A high over the southern Tasman Sea extends a ridge over
southeastern and central Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Scattered showers, some rain areas, and isolated thunderstorms over the
northern tropics. Mostly fine in the northwest of the state, except for some
very isolated showers. Scattered showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over
western districts west of Longreach, and isolated showers elsewhere about the
southern tropics. Mostly fine over the remainder of the state with only patchy
light drizzle about the southeast coast and hinterland. Moderate SW to NW winds
over the northern tropics. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds in the southeast,
tending NE/NW over the Channel Country.
Forecast for Saturday
Cyclone Zelia is expected to continue moving southeast away from the
Queensland coast. The monsoon trough should remain over far northern
Queensland, with monsoonal rain and thunderstorms continuing. Another surface
though should extend from northwestern Queensland into the southern interior by
the evening. Showers and thunderstorms should continue in the state's west and
southern interior, with the southeast remaining mainly fine except for some
isolated light showers about the coast. Ocean swells increasing about the
southeast coastal waters, breaking dangerously inshore.
Forecast for Sunday
Scattered showers and isolated storms should continue about the state's west.
Monsoonal showers and thunderstorms should continue over the northern tropics,
while the southern tropical coast and interior is expected to remain mainly
fine. A ridge of high pressure will maintain mostly fine conditions over the
southeastern corner of the state, with only isolated light showers near the
coast.
Forecast for Monday
An upper level trough, combined with a surface trough extending from
northwestern Queensland into the Maranoa will allow some isolated showers to
form about the southeastern parts of the state, though the falls should remain
mainly light. Fine over the far southwest in drier S'ly winds. Rain areas and
thunderstorms are expected elsewhere over central Queensland and the southern
tropics in the unstable and moist conditions to the north of the surface trough.
Monsoonal showers and thunderstorms continuing in the northern tropics.
Forecast for Tuesday
Monsoonal showers and storms continuing about the far north of the state, and
scattered showers and isolated storms about the southern tropics due to an upper
trough. Fine in the southwest and southern interior. Isolated showers about
the southeast with just the chance of a few isolated storms.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
Monsoonal rain and thunderstorms will continue over much of the tropics.
Lingering instability over southeastern and central parts of the state should
allow isolated showers and storms to continue, however prolonged heavy rain is
not expected.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
