MELBOURNE - Jan 13/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough extends over the northern Queensland tropics to a low lying over the northern Coral Sea and then to Tropical Cyclone Vania northeast of New Caledonia. The low over the northern Coral Sea may deepen into a tropical cyclone overnight or during Friday but poses no immediate threat to the Queensland coast. A high over the southern Tasman Sea extends a ridge over southeastern and central Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Rain areas and scattered thunderstorms over far western districts this afternoon and overnight with moderate to heavy falls. Some showers and thunderstorms across the tropics, isolated showers and thunderstorms over most of the central interior. Very isolated showers over the remainder of the SE region and about the central and SE coasts. Moderate to fresh SE to E winds about most of the east coast. Light to moderate mostly NE to NW winds through the tropics. Moderate N/NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Friday A trough system will lie over western Queensland while an active monsoon trough will extend over the northern Queensland tropics. The deepening low pressure system or Tropical Cyclone over the northern Coral Sea will remain well offshore and most likely more slowly southeast. Rain areas and thunderstorms are expected over the northern tropics with some heavy falls. Patchy rain, showers and thunderstorms continue over western districts west of Longreach with possibly locally heavy falls with thunderstorms. Showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southern tropics. Mostly fine elsewhere with only isolated showers and morning drizzle, chiefly near the coast and adjacent inland. Forecast for Saturday The monsoon trough remains active over northern Queensland with rain and thunderstorms continuing. Some heavy falls are likely. The low or tropical cyclone over the northern Coral Sea will most likely continue moving southeast away from the Queensland coast. The other trough system will persist over western Queensland with showers and thunderstorms continuing west of Longreach and possible locally heavy falls with storms. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms about the central coast and southern tropics. Mostly fine conditions elsewhere with only isolated showers near the coast under the influence of the ridge. Forecast for Sunday The western trough will move across southern Queensland, extending unstable conditions east. Patchy rain, showers and thunderstorm continue over western Queensland but should also extend into the central interior and the southern inland border. Monsoonal showers and thunderstorms continue over the northern tropics. The ridge of high pressure will maintain mostly fine conditions in the south with only isolated showers expected, chiefly near the coast. Forecast for Monday The trough over inland Queensland moves further east to lie from northwestern Queensland through the central interior and into the southeast coast. Isolated showers and possible isolated thunderstorms over southeastern Queensland and also the southern interior. More widespread showers and thunderstorms over the central interior north of Longreach and through the northwest. Monsoonal flow continues over the tropics with widespread rain areas and thunderstorms. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Monsoonal rain and thunderstorms will continue over much of the tropics. A series of upper level troughs will most likely maintain instability over southeastern and central parts of the state with showers and isolated thunderstorms continuing. A ridge of high pressure will clear weather through southwestern Queensland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
