MELBOURNE - Jan 13/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends over the northern Queensland tropics to a low
lying over the northern Coral Sea and then to Tropical Cyclone Vania northeast
of New Caledonia. The low over the northern Coral Sea may deepen into a tropical
cyclone overnight or during Friday but poses no immediate threat to the
Queensland coast. A high over the southern Tasman Sea extends a ridge over
southeastern and central Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Rain areas and scattered thunderstorms over far western districts this
afternoon and overnight with moderate to heavy falls. Some showers and
thunderstorms across the tropics, isolated showers and thunderstorms over most
of the central interior. Very isolated showers over the remainder of the SE
region and about the central and SE coasts. Moderate to fresh SE to E winds
about most of the east coast. Light to moderate mostly NE to NW winds through
the tropics. Moderate N/NE winds over the interior.
Forecast for Friday
A trough system will lie over western Queensland while an active monsoon
trough will extend over the northern Queensland tropics. The deepening low
pressure system or Tropical Cyclone over the northern Coral Sea will remain well
offshore and most likely more slowly southeast. Rain areas and thunderstorms are
expected over the northern tropics with some heavy falls. Patchy rain, showers
and thunderstorms continue over western districts west of Longreach with
possibly locally heavy falls with thunderstorms. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms over the southern tropics. Mostly fine elsewhere with only
isolated showers and morning drizzle, chiefly near the coast and adjacent
inland.
Forecast for Saturday
The monsoon trough remains active over northern Queensland with rain and
thunderstorms continuing. Some heavy falls are likely. The low or tropical
cyclone over the northern Coral Sea will most likely continue moving southeast
away from the Queensland coast. The other trough system will persist over
western Queensland with showers and thunderstorms continuing west of Longreach
and possible locally heavy falls with storms. Isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms about the central coast and southern tropics. Mostly fine
conditions elsewhere with only isolated showers near the coast under the
influence of the ridge.
Forecast for Sunday
The western trough will move across southern Queensland, extending unstable
conditions east. Patchy rain, showers and thunderstorm continue over western
Queensland but should also extend into the central interior and the southern
inland border. Monsoonal showers and thunderstorms continue over the northern
tropics. The ridge of high pressure will maintain mostly fine conditions in the
south with only isolated showers expected, chiefly near the coast.
Forecast for Monday
The trough over inland Queensland moves further east to lie from northwestern
Queensland through the central interior and into the southeast coast. Isolated
showers and possible isolated thunderstorms over southeastern Queensland and
also the southern interior. More widespread showers and thunderstorms over the
central interior north of Longreach and through the northwest. Monsoonal flow
continues over the tropics with widespread rain areas and thunderstorms.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
Monsoonal rain and thunderstorms will continue over much of the tropics. A
series of upper level troughs will most likely maintain instability over
southeastern and central parts of the state with showers and isolated
thunderstorms continuing. A ridge of high pressure will clear weather through
southwestern Queensland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
