Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 12/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends over the northern tropics and is moving gradually
south. A ridge of high pressure will build along the east Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Showers, thunderstorms and rain areas in the west and north of the state,
with some areas of moderate to locally heavy falls. Isolated showers in the
southeast. Moderate to fresh SE to E winds in the east. Light to moderate mostly
NE to NW winds elsewhere, fresh at times in the west.
Forecast for Friday
A new surface trough will enter the SW of the state. The monsoonal trough
becomes more active over the northern Coral Sea with increased rainfall over the
southern tropics inland from Cairns and extending across to Georgetown. Showers
and thunderstorms generally over the tropics and extending south through western
districts near the trough. Isolated showers about eastern districts and through
the central interior. Becoming fine over the southern interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface trough in the west will stall but continue to generate showers
and thunderstorms. Isolated showers about eastern districts and fine over the
central and southern interior. The monsoonal trough in the north will generate
rain areas with showers and thunderstorms.
Forecast for Sunday
The western trough now moves across southern QLD reaching the Darling Downs
and the central interior. Showers and thunderstorms over the tropics and the NW
of the state. Some rain areas may develop south of the trough over the southern
districts. Generally fine over the eastern interior and the SE with isolated
showers about the east coast.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
By Monday the southern trough will move through the SE district with a band
of showers and thunderstorms, becoming fine across southern QLD and the SW.
Showers and thunderstorms remaining over the NW and the tropics. Showers, storms
and rain areas will continue in the north, with generally only isolated showers
near the coast in the south.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
