MELBOURNE - Jan 12/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough extends over the northern tropics and is moving gradually south. A ridge of high pressure will build along the east Queensland coast. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms over much of the state this afternoon and overnight, tending to rain areas over the tropics and in the SW overnight with moderate to heavy falls. Isolated evening and night showers and thunderstorms towards the SE region. Showers generally about the Capricorn, Wide Bay and SE coasts. Light to moderate NE to NW winds over the tropics, freshening in the Southern Gulf. Moderate to fresh SE/NE winds about the east coast. Moderate SE/NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Thursday The monsoon trough will merge with another trough to the south to result in a sharp trough extending from the Northern Territory into South Australia. An active monsoon trough will also persist through the northern Coral Sea. Moist N'ly winds ahead of the trough will continue to produce rain areas, showers and thunderstorms over western districts as well as the tropics with moderate to heavy falls. Showers generally over the SE region. Forecast for Friday A new surface trough will enter the SW of the state. The monsoonal trough becomes more active over the northern Coral Sea with increased rainfall over the southern tropics inland from Cairns and extending across to Georgetown. Showers and thunderstorms generally over the tropics and extending south through western districts near the trough. Isolated showers about eastern districts and through the central interior. Becoming fine over the southern interior. Forecast for Saturday Much the same pattern for Saturday, the western trough will stall but continue to generate showers and thunderstorms. Isolated showers about eastern districts and fine over the central and southern interior. The monsoonal trough seems to weaken over the northern Coral sea. Forecast for Sunday The western trough now moves across southern QLD reaching the Darling Downs and the central interior. Showers and thunderstorms over the tropics and the NW of the state. Some rain areas may develop south of the trough over the southern districts. Generally fine over the eastern interior and the SE. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday By Monday the southern trough will move through the SE district with a band of showers and thunderstorms, becoming fine across southern QLD and the SW. Showers and thunderstorms remaining over the NW and the tropics. By Tuesday the trough has cleared the SE coast with isolated showers remaining. Showers and thunderstorms across the tropics and extending SE into the Capricorn and the Wide Bay coast. By Wednesday rain areas and thunderstorms across the tropics, showers about the east coast, fine over the interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
