Australia -- Queensland Weather Update
MELBOURNE - Jan 11/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough extends over the northern tropics and is moving gradually south. A ridge of high pressure will build along the east Queensland coast during today and the next few days. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Patchy rain about the southeast will become isolated showers during the day. Rain areas and thunderstorms are expected around northern and western Queensland. Isolated afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms for remaining areas. Light to moderate NE to NW winds, fresh at times about the coast in the south. Forecast for Thursday The monsoon trough will merge with another trough to the south to result in a sharp trough extending from the Northern Territory into South Australia. An active monsoon trough will also persist through the northern Coral Sea. Moist N'ly winds ahead of the trough will continue to produce rain areas, showers and thunderstorms over western districts west of about Longreach with possible locally heavy falls with thunderstorms. Rain areas and thunderstorms also continue through the tropics and central districts north of about Clermont with at least some moderate falls. Mostly fine conditions over the southeastern corner of the state under the influence of the ridge, with only isolated showers and early inland drizzle areas expected. Forecast for Friday The trough system will lie near the western Queensland border while an active monsoon trough will extend from a deepening low near New Caledonia to the northeast Queensland tropics. Widespread rain areas and thunderstorms are therefore expected over the northern tropics with some heavy falls. Rain areas and thunderstorms also continue through western districts west of Longreach with possibly locally heavy falls with thunderstorms. Mostly fine conditions elsewhere with only isolated showers and morning drizzle, chiefly near the coast and adjacent inland Forecast for Saturday The monsoon trough remains active over northern Queensland with rain and thunderstorms continuing. Some heavy falls are likely. The other trough system will extend over southwestern parts of the state with showers and thunderstorms persisting over western districts west of Longreach. Mostly fine conditions elsewhere with only isolated showers near the coast under the influence of the ridge. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The monsoon trough is expected to remain active over the tropics with rain and thunderstorms continuing. The other trough over southwestern Queensland is expected to move slowly east during the outlook period, with showers and isolated thunderstorms extending east with the trough, most likely reaching the southeast Queensland coast on Tuesday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday.
