Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 9/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
The monsoon trough extends over the northern tropics and is expected to shift
south today. An upper level low lies over the southern Capricornia district and
is expected to drift slowly west southwest today. A surface trough lies near the
southern Queensland coast and is expected to move inland today.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Rain areas and thunderstorms over southeastern districts and the Maranoa,
with heavy falls about the Southeast Coast, far southern Wide Bay and Burnett,
eastern Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts [a Severe Weather Warning is
current]. Showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere, more widespread with
rain areas over the northern tropics. Moderate SE to NE winds in the south,
tending fresh and gusty in the southeast. Moderate to fresh W to NW winds in the
far north. Light winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper level low will continue to move southwest and merge with a trough
over eastern South Australia. Moist NE winds will continue to produce rain areas
over southeastern districts, with possible heavy falls over the Southeast Coast
District and southeastern parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district.
The monsoon trough will continue to move south over the Northern Territory,
extending rain areas and thunderstorms further south over the Queensland tropics
and the Northwest district. Isolated showers and thunderstorms continuing
elsewhere, more scattered in the Channel Country.
Forecast for Wednesday
A high will move into the southern Tasman Sea, extending a firm ridge north
towards the southern and central Queensland coasts. Patchy rain areas and
isolated thunderstorms will therefore ease to showers over southeastern
districts as the ridge starts to dominate. Rain areas and thunderstorms will
continue over northern Queensland and extend south over western districts as the
monsoon trough continues to shift south over the Northern Territory. Scattered
showers along the central coast. Isolated showers and inland thunderstorms
elsewhere.
Forecast for Thursday
The monsoon trough will most likely merge with another trough to the south to
result in a sharp trough extending from northwestern Australia into South
Australia. Moist N'ly winds ahead of the trough will continue to extend rain
areas and thunderstorms into the Queensland tropics and western districts west
of Longreach. Mostly fine conditions over the southeastern corner of the state
under the influence of the ridge, with only isolated showers and early inland
drizzle areas expected. Patchy rain areas and possible isolated thunderstorms
elsewhere.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
A ridge of high pressure will dominate weather over southeastern districts
throughout the outlook period, with only isolated showers expected, chiefly near
the coast. Conditions will remain moist and unstable through western districts
and the northern tropics with rain areas and thunderstorms continuing, possibly
extending into central districts on Sunday.
