Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 9/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A weak monsoon trough extends over the northern tropics. An upper level low
lies near the Wide Bay coast and will continue moving towards the southwest over
land during the next couple of days. A surface trough near the southern
Queensland coast will move slowly westwards.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Rain areas and thunderstorms over southeastern districts and the Maranoa with
moderate to heavy falls about the Southeast Coast and southern Wide Bay and
Burnett district. Showers and isolated thunderstorms over most of the rest of
the state, though fine in the far southwest. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds
over southern Queensland, strong at times along the southeast coast and about
the higher ground of the southeast interior. Moderate to fresh SW to NW winds in
the far north. Light winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
Rain areas and thunderstorms over southern areas of Qld, with moderate to
heavy falls about the Southeast Coast, southern Wide Bay and Burnett and into
the Darling Downs and Granite Belt. Rain areas and thunderstorms over the
Queensland tropics. Showers and thunderstorms elsewhere, though mostly fine over
the northern Channel Country with possible showers or thunderstorms. Moderate SE
to NE winds in the south, tending fresh and gusty in the southeast. Light to
moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper level low will continue to move southwest and merge with a trough
over eastern South Australia. Moist NE winds will continue to produce rain areas
over southeastern districts, with possible locally heavy falls over the
Southeast Coast District and southeastern parts of the Darling Downs and Granite
Belt district. The monsoon trough will continue to move south over the Northern
Territory, extending rain areas and thunderstorms further south over the
Queensland tropics and the Northwest district. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms continuing elsewhere, more scattered in the Channel Country.
Forecast for Wednesday
A high will move into the southern Tasman Sea, extending a firm ridge north
towards the southern and central Queensland coasts. Patchy rain areas and
isolated thunderstorms will therefore ease to showers over southeastern
districts as the ridge starts to dominate. Rain areas and thunderstorms will
continue over northern Queensland and extend south over western districts as the
monsoon trough continues to shift south over the Northern Territory. Scattered
showers along the central coast. Isolated showers and inland thunderstorms
elsewhere.
Forecast for Thursday
The monsoon trough continues to move slowly southwards, with rain areas and
thunderstorms affecting most of western and northern Queensland. Isolated
showers in eastern districts in the fresh to strong SE winds as the ridge firms
along the east coast, extending to adjacent inland parts. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms elsewhere.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
A ridge of high pressure will dominate weather over central and southeast
districts throughout the outlook period, with only isolated showers expected,
chiefly near the coast. Conditions will remain moist and unstable through
western districts and the northern tropics with rain areas and thunderstorms
continuing.
