MELBOURNE - Jan 7/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak monsoonal trough is located over Cape York Peninsula. An upper level low near the Capricornia coast is expected to move offshore overnight and remain offshore on Saturday. A surface trough lying off the Capricorn and Fraser coasts will remain slow moving. Forecast for the rest of Friday Rain areas over the southeast of state with moderate to heavy falls and local thunder over the Wide Bay district and northern parts of the Southeast district. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the Capricornia and southern Central coast districts. Fine over the western interior of the state. Light to moderate W to NW winds across the tropics. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds further south. Light winds over the interior. Forecast for Saturday Rain areas will continue over the southeast with moderate to heavy falls about the Wide Bay coast and Southeast district. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms will develop over the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the Capricornia and southeast Central Highlands district. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue across the tropics with thunderstorm activity extending further south across the Northwest district. Remaining fine over the remainder of the interior. Light to moderate W to NW winds across the tropics. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds about the coast further south. Light to moderate E to SE winds over the interior. Forecast for Sunday The upper level low is expected to move back inland over the Capricorn region whilst the monsoon trough is expected to intensify over the far north. Showers and thunderstorms will increase to rain areas over the tropics. Rain areas will continue over the southeast with some moderate to heavy falls about parts of the Wide Bay district and the Southeast coast district. Isolated showers and thunderstorms continuing over the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about the Capricornia and southeast Central Highlands district. Isolated afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms generally over the eastern half of the state. Fine over the remainder of the interior. Forecast for Monday The upper level low is expected to move west into the central interior with further rain areas over the southeast of the state, spreading across the Darling Downs. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely over the east coast and adjacent inland, tending more isolated over the interior of the state. Showers and thunderstorms will tend to rain areas in response to the strengthening monsoon trough. Forecast for Tuesday The upper level low should continue to move southwestwards into the southwest of the state. Rain areas will continue in the southeast of the state with further moderate to heavy falls possible. Much of the rest of the state will see showers and thunderstorms. The monsoon trough will persist over the northern tropics with further showers, thunderstorms and rain areas expected for the tropics. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The upper low weakens and moves south into New South Wales while a firm ridge builds along the southeast coast. Rain should ease to showers over the southeast of the state during the outlook period as the ridge builds with freshening SE to E winds. An upper trough approaching from the west during Thursday and Friday may bring increasing rain areas to the west of the state. Showers and thunderstorms will persist across the tropics. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
