Australia -- Queensland Weather Update
MELBOURNE - Jan 2/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A ridge along the east coast of Queensland is weakening as the high in the Tasman Sea moves eastwards. The monsoon trough is becoming established through Torres Strait and will move slowly southwards over Cape York Peninsula over the next few days. An upper trough extends from the central Coral Sea through to southeast Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Further showers, storms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls possible over the far north of the state. More isolated showers and storms over the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and isolated inland thunderstorms will continue about central and southern districts east of about Longreach to Cunamulla. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms are possible about the central and southern interior. Some middle level cloud may produce some light patchy rain and local thunder over the far southwest. Light to moderate NW winds over far north Cape York Peninsula. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Monday The monsoon trough will nudge southwards over Cape York Peninsula, generating further showers, storms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls over the far north of the state. Showers and storms will occur over much of the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue about the southern coast and adjacent inland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will develop across the remaining south-east inland and the southern interior. Mostly fine in the southwest with just very isolated thunderstorms. Light to moderate NW winds over northern Cape York Peninsula. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday The monsoon trough will persist over the northern tropics, bringing further showers, storms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls over far northern areas of the state. Showers and storms will occur over much of the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue about the remaining eastern half of the state. The west of the state away from the tropics should be mostly fine with only very isolated thunderstorms possible. Winds will become fresh along the southern coast as a low develops over the southern Coral Sea. Forecast for Wednesday The monsoon trough remains near stationary across Cape York Peninsula, with further showers, storms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls continuing over far northern areas of the state. More isolated showers and storms over the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the remaining eastern half of the state. Some patchy light rain and very isolated thunderstorms possible in the west of the state away from the tropics. Moderate to fresh S'ly winds along the southern coast as a low persists in the southern Coral Sea. Forecast for Thursday The monsoon trough persists across the Gulf of Carpentaria, with showers, storms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls continuing over Cape York Peninsula. More isolated showers and storms over the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about the remaining eastern half of the state. Fine in the west of the state away from the tropics. Moderate to fresh S'ly winds along the southern coast as a low persists in the southern Coral Sea. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The monsoon trough remains near stationary and will maintain showers, storms and rain areas with some moderate to heavy falls over far north Queensland. The low in the southern Coral Sea will weaken during the period. Showers and isolated thunderstorms continuing over eastern districts, but generally decreasing as a mid level ridge becomes established over much of the state. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Monday.
