MELBOURNE - Dec 31/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A ridge along the east coast of Queensland will begin to weaken during today, weakening further on Sunday as the high in the Tasman Sea moves eastwards. The monsoon trough will become established again on Saturday through Torres Strait and will then move slowly southwards over Cape York Peninsula. An upper trough will begin to develop off the southeast coast today, shifting further inland over the southeast of the state on Sunday. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the northwest and tropics, tending to rain areas in the far north. Scattered showers along most of the east coast, tending to rain at times with possible thunderstorms about the north tropical coast with moderate falls. Showers and inland thunderstorms about central and southern districts east of about Emerald. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times near the coast. Forecast for Sunday Further showers, storms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls will continue over the far north of the state. Showers and storms will occur over the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and isolated inland thunderstorms will continue about central and southern districts east of about Emerald. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms are possible about the central and southern interior. Some middle level cloud may produce some light patchy rain and local thunder over the far southwest. NW winds will occur over the far north Cape York Peninsula while light to moderate SE to NE winds will occur elsewhere. Forecast for Monday The monsoon trough will nudge further southwards over Cape York Peninsula with further showers, storms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls continuing over the far north of the state. Showers and storms will occur over much of the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue about the southern coast and adjacent inland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will develop across the remaining south-east inland and the southern interior. Forecast for Tuesday The monsoon trough will extend further southwards over the northern tropics, with further showers, storms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls continuing over the northern areas of the state. Showers and storms will occur over much of the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and local thunder will continue about the remaining eastern half of the state. Most of the west of the state away from the tropics should be mostly fine with only possible isolated thunderstorms. Winds will become fresh to strong along the southern coast as a low develops over the southern Coral Sea. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The low in the southern Coral Sea will move slowly to the south-west during the period allowing winds along the southern coast to ease. A trough moves northeastwards across the south of the state during the outlook period. Conditions remain unstable ahead of the trough with showers and thunderstorms continuing, but contracting northeastwards with the trough. The monsoon trough will become further established over the far north of the state and will maintain showers, storms and rain areas with some moderate to heavy falls. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Saturday.
