MELBOURNE - Dec 31/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A ridge along the east coast of Queensland and will begin to relax during Saturday. The monsoon trough will become established again on Saturday through Torres Strait and will then move slowly southwards. An upper trough will move onto the southeast coast during the weekend. Forecast for the rest of Friday Showers along the east coast, increasing to rain at times with some moderate to heavy falls about the north tropical coast. Further showers and thunderstorms will occur over the remaining tropics, and extend towards the southwest of the state. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast with light to moderate NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Saturday Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the northwest and tropics, tending to rain in the far north. Scattered showers along the east coast, more isolated in the south. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms about the eastern districts. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times near the coast. Forecast for Sunday The ridge along the east coast will continue to weaken while the monsoon trough slips southwards over Cape York Peninsula. So further showers, storms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls will continue over the far north of the state. Showers and storms will occur over the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and local thunder will continue about the southern coast and adjacent inland. Some middle level cloud will possibly produce some very weak rain and local thunder over southern inland border areas. NW winds will occur north of the monsoon trough while light to moderate SE to NE winds will occur elsewhere. Forecast for Monday The monsoon trough will nudge further southwards over Cape York Peninsula with further showers, storms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls continuing over the far north of the state. Showers and storms will occur over much of the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and local thunder will continue about the southern coast and adjacent inland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will develop across the remaining south-east inland and the southern interior. Winds will freshen along the southern coast as a low develops over the southern Coral Sea. Forecast for Tuesday The monsoon trough will extend further southwards over the northern tropics, with further showers, storms and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls continuing over the northern areas of the state. Showers and storms will occur over much of the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and local thunder will continue about the remaining eastern half of the state. Winds will become fresh to strong along the southern coast as a low develops over the southern Coral Sea. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The low will move slowly to the south-east during the period allowing winds along the southern coast to ease and shift to the NE to N as a drier S'ly change moves across the south-west of the state during Wednesday and Thursday. The monsoon trough will become established over the far north of the state and will maintain showers, storm and rain areas with some moderate to heavy falls. Showers and thunderstorms will continue over most inland districts as conditions will remain unstable before the wind change. This activity will contract eastwards before the change and become scattered over the southeast on Thursday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
