MELBOURNE - Dec 29/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A ridge extended along most of the east coast of Qld and is expected to firm during the day. A surface trough is located off the southern and central coast of Qld and is expected to deepen a little during the day. A monsoon low was located over the Top End of the Northern Territory. A weak monsoon trough extended from this low across the northern Gulf of Carpentaria. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Showers along the east coast. Showers and or storms over the remaining tropics and over the central interior. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the southern and central coasts spreading along the remaining east coast during the afternoon and evening. Light to moderate NE winds inland. Forecast for Friday The firm ridge will persist along the east coast. So showers will continue along the east coast increasing to rain at times with some moderate to heavy falls about the north tropical coast. Further showers and storms will occur over the remaining eastern tropics. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast with light to moderate NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Saturday The ridge along the east coast will begin to weaken. The monsoon trough will begin to reform through Torres Strait. Showers will continue along the east coast but will become more isolated as the onshore moderate to fresh SE winds ease during the day. The rain areas and moderate to heavy falls about the north tropical coast will break to showers. Showers and storms will continue over the tropics while fine conditions will continue over the southern inland. Light to moderate NE winds will continue across most inland districts. Forecast for Sunday The ridge along the east coast will continue to weaken while the monsoon trough slips southwards over Cape York Peninsula. So further showers, storsm and rain areas with moderate to heavy falls will continue over the far north of the state. Showers and storsm will occur over the remaining tropics. Isolated mostly morning showers will occur along the southern coast. Some middle cloud will possibly produce some very weak rain and local thunder over southern inland border areas. Isolated afternoon showers and storms may occur over the Darling Downs triggered by instability associated with the upper trough. NW winds will occur north of the monsoon trough while light to moderate SE to NE winds will occur elsewhere. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The monsoon trough will become established over the far north of the state and will maintain showers, storm and rain areas with some moderate to heavy falls. Showers and thunderstorms will continue over most southern inland districts as conditions will remain unstable due to cooling in the middle levels of the atmosphere. The ridge along the southern and central coasts of Qld will rebuild during Tuesday and Wednesday as a low develops over the northern Tasman Sea. So winds will freshen from the SE along this section of coast and showers will again develop in coastal areas. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
