Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 27/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A surface trough is located near yeppoon and is expected to move only slowly
northwards during the next few days. Firm ridging from a high over the Tasman
Sea extended along the southern coast in the wake of the surface trough. An
upper trough is located over western Queensland while a deep monsoonal NW
airflow continued across northern Qld. This monsoon flow will weaken over the
next few days.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Cloudy with rain areas and showers about the Capricornia, Wide Bay and
Sunshine Coast area with an easing to showers in the south late today. Isolated
showers and drizzle areas over the remaining south-east corner of the state.
Monsoonal showers and storms will continue over most of the tropics where
moderate to fresh NW winds. Fine over the south-west. Moderate to fresh S/SE
winds over the south-east of the state becoming strong at times along the
southern coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
Cloudy with rain areas and showers about the Capricornia, Central Coast and
adjacent inland. Isolated showers and drizzle areas over the remaining southern
coastal districts. Monsoonal showers and storms will continue over most of the
remaining tropics where light to moderate NW winds shifting SE/E along the east
tropical coast in the afternoon and evening. Fine over most southern inland
districts. Moderate SE winds over southern areas becoming fresh at times along
the southern coast.
Forecast for Thursday
Showers along the east coast tending to rain at times about the Herbert
Burdekin. Scattered showers and storms over most of the remaining tropics and
the central interior of the state with some moderate falls likely especially
about the central interior. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the
east coast shifting NE inland.
Forecast for Friday
Showers along the east coast tending to rain at times with some moderate
falls about the Herbert Burdekin and north tropical coast. Scattered showers and
storms over most of the remaining tropics and the far west of the state. Fine
elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast shifting NE inland.
Forecast for Saturday
Showers along the east coast tending to rain at times about the north
tropical coast where some moderate falls. Scattered showers and storms over most
of the remaining tropics and the far west of the state. Isolated afternoon
showers and or storms developing about the Darling Downs area. Fine elsewhere.
Mostly moderate SE winds along the east coast shifting NE inland and along the
southern coast in the afternoon. The monsoon trough will again become
established through Torres Strait and enhance the shower and storms activity in
this area.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The ridge along the east coast will continue to weaken with a new trough
system moving eastwards across the south-west of the state and northwards along
the NSW coast during Monday. This system will come to a halt over the southern
interior on Tuesday while continuing to move northwards along the southern coast
of Qld on Tuesday. So showers and or storms will continue across most of the
tropics and will become scattered about Cape York Peninsula due to the presence
of the monsoon trough. Some moderate to heavy falls will occur. Isolated showers
and storms will occur over the south-east on Sunday and then become scattered on
Monday with the approach of the coastal and inland troughs. This activity will
become more scattered over the south-east and spread westwards a little on
Tuesday as the coastal front moves northwards along the southern coast. In the
wake of this coastal trough the S/SE winds will be strong and showers will occur
in this onshore flow.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
